Any b/ that have ever been to Japan before.
I am a Korean-American male, 24 years old. I have a basic grasp of the language, can say most things, but cannot read kanji.
I planning on traveling to Japan for a week in the Spring.
Any tips?
I heard that Japanese are quite xenophobic, so I'm thinking I will introduce myself as an American raised Japanese.

Umm, aren't your eyes slanted differently?

I don't think you can pass for a Jap.

any tips on what to look out for, what to do, what to expect from people who have been to japan?

Fucking mana tree bump, c'mon now.

Once they hear "american" you'll get the same treatment, Korean descent or not.

What kind of tips could you possibly be looking for?
The only one I have is get rid of as much change as you can before you come back, because you can't exchange coins back into native money. And the Japs have the equivalent of a $5 coin, so it isn't as easy as it sounds.

No, really. Either they will call you dirty gaijin monkey and laugh at you or call you dirty Korean monkey and laugh at you.

There are facial differences, but eyes don't "slant" different directions. Japanese may be able to tell the difference.

Go to Shibuya and take a pic of yourself touching the Hachiko statue. Its a very rewarding experience.
Remember to say "thanks" for everything to avoid getting weird looks.

Thanks for the tip. That does sound difficult. I'm just looking for maybe advice on sightseeing spots, or areas of Japan I should avoid?
I know Japan isn't a particularly dangerous country.

Interesting to see you know the original spelling of Korea, before Japan during its colonization changed it to K.

Avoid wearing outlandish (work with me here, I know it's Japan) clothing, particularly with anything that might be construed as a weapon, like chains, etc.
By a wardrobe quirk I found myself in Akihabara in BDUs with a chain wallet in my breast pocket, and I was accosted by police because they thought the chain was a weapon.

Well if you look Japanese (Which you don't, Japanese can tell when you are Korean OP). You will be expected to act Japanese. A (white/brown)foreigner has a bit of leeway in traditions/politeness since they just think "Haha, Silly Gaijin"

Anyway, since you are only going for a week, I'd suggest Osaka, it is a nice city and not *as* huge and intimidating like Tokyo, and has other nice locations around it such as Kobe and Kyoto. although if you want to go to certain sites such as Akihabara you have to go to Tokyo and to get from Osaka to Tokyo in a day is stupid expensive (can either take a plane or bullet train, each will cost around 16,000yen and take around 2+ hours) Regardless you should have a fun experience if you aren't trying to go to Japan Only places.

Passing yourself off as American raised Japanese might be bad, if someone calls you out on being Korean it will be much worse then you just admitting you have a Korean parent or whatever. Especially if you plan on drinking, Japanese people are normally pretty reserved, give them alcohol and they will be rude as fuck/start fights, I was drinking with some girls and one said *some guy I didn't know" 's dick was better then *other girls* boyfriend who was so small, the other girl punched her so hard her nose probably broke.

Anyway have fun !

I generally wear for function instead of fashion, and all the pockets are nice. I figured in Akiba, a guy in military duds wouldn't catch that much notice. Sorry you have a problem with my fashion, but I like it.

Oh, get a rail pass. I forget how to go about it exactly, but you buy a pass that's good on all JR lines (including the Nozomi shinkansen, which goes from Tokyo to Kyoto and Osaka, among other destinations) for the duration of your trip. I think it was around $200-300 or thereabouts.

* Nozomi = fastest Shinkansen train type, Japan Rail Passes not valid. Hikari = next fastest Shinkansen train type, Japan Rail Passes valid.
