Far as I can tell you just fling handfuls of tiles at each other and the person who shouts RON the loudest wins. Right?

It's more like whoever shouts RON first. It's a very honour-based game, you only declare you've won when you think you deserve it.

Your on Anon.

Is there anyone that can prove to me that this isn't a game mostly based on luck? I've been having shit luck lately since I always deal someone's winning tile but they never deal mine, even though I have a high chance to win. Plus, everytime I have a dora 4 or higher, I just can't seem to make a ron or tsumo.

>> No.65788

Yeah there's a big facor based on luck in Mahjong, but that's like dismissing poker as luck based as well. And having Doras doesn't count for the 1-Han minimum in order to have a winning hand.

>> No.65847

>>65728
You counter the luck-based elements of Mahjong with strategy, the foremost part being your hand's development. It's always possible to develop a decent hand throughout the course of a game that does not conflict with other players' hands. Eventually, a winning strategy boils down to "a matter of time" waiting on probable discards/draws.

you're doing it wrong. when playing conservatively i will go days and days without playing into someone else's hand. not that you can avoid it altogether, but you need to be aware of how likely it is that you can complete your hand before your opponents do. if your hand is crap you should play safe discards. if you are two tiles from winning you should usually go for it. try to keep your hand closed unless you know what you're going for. learn what hands will allow you to go out, and be careful with your discards so that you don't end up in furiten.
