Any kind of surgery will cost an arm and a leg regardless of what it is. This has to do with a part of the safety regulations in the US, for any new method or type of surgery it has to go though years of testing in the lab costing billions just to test the safety even if it is more than obvious. It really is a vicious cycle in the US because:

1.research cost is high so debt needs to be paid off
2.cost of surgery is high because of research
3.lack of doctors specializing in the field will add to a bonus because of their pay
4.people are scared off because of prices and go to Thailand and China to perform the surgery
5.These doctors retire overtime and no new doctors replace them therefore prices increase (+inflation)

The above happens to any type of surgery that is obscure. A few years back I went through leg lengthening surgery. The cost in america was about $100,000 which obviously i could not afford. I went to China to do it for $22,000. I did my research of course and what I've found is that other countries for this particular surgery bought most of the research off the US for a small fee and had many doctors specialize in the field to lower cost. In the case of transgender surgery the number of doctors are extremely high in asia over leg lengthing specialists so even though the surgery is more extreme, I wouldn't be surprised if it was cheaper than what I had paid.
