I'm trying to decide which characters should be COs in a Touhou-themed Advance Wars game

Alternatively, use all the playable characters up til a certain point, ie. Imperishable Night teams and PoFV characters. Starting characters could be Reimu and Marisa, and everyone else is selectively unlockable. Subsequent "expansions" would introduce all the later characters game by game.

Alice: can produce Doll units which are Infantry strength but blow up when they die, dealing 1 HP damage to the unit that killed it
Cirno: freezes a unit/area of units for a turn (Sturm with nerfed or no damage)
Meiling: units have high defense
Sakuya: grants you an extra free turn to move units
Mokou:
Reisen: her power makes the opponent's units not follow their CO's directions for a turn
Tewi: high luck (Nell)
Sanae: her sluttiness makes her infantry stronger than normal (just kidding, I don't know)
Aya: specializes in air combat
Nitori: water units are better, of course, and like Andy she can heal their HP

Rumia: causes Fog of War for the opponent
Patchouli: units get different boosts depending on the type of terrain they're on (kind of like Lash but more complex)
Flandre: destroys 1 of any opponent's unit regardless of its HP level
Yukari: Teleports a meteor in or something
Satori: she can read minds, so her units have good counterattacks
Koishi: units are invisible to opponent until they walk into them
Utsuho: NUCLEAR FUSION

Absolutely has to have Remilia and Byakuren. Both are the leaders of their groups. It needs Shikieiki as well, since she's supposed to be the most powerful touhou. Also needs more UFO reps.

Nazrin: Can see through any fog of war (or a longer FoW sight range)
Kogasa: Ambushes, I think someone's already mentioned this
Ichirin: Can directly deal damage to air units
Murasa: lolshipwrecks
Shou: Can buff units for a turn? Kinda hard to come up with a specific power when she's the avatar of a god of war...
Byakuren: Causes a Cease-fire for a turn. Units can still move, but no one can't attack, and no one can take cities.

Remilia: Either a general unit buff because Charisma, or units can sap enemy health, but have slightly less health or defense
Shikieiki: Can temporarily disable/negate the other CO's power
Suwako: It's been a long time since I played Advanced Wars, but if they have unit production, then Suwako speeds it up. Otherwise, faster healing.
Kanako: Onbashira tanks
Mokou: Either faster healing, or napalm bombs that hurt anyone in the tile and stay for a turn or 2.
Kaguya: Again, faster healing or no movement penalty in forests.

France had excellent early war tanks. Germany had excellent late war tanks. The sprites don't look like much of anything. The models in general for Green Earth are pretty much across the board, with A-10s (modern American ground attack) for fighters and Ju Junkers (WWII German bombers) for bombers. Some of their ground vehicles could count as StuGs or something, with Walking Stukas for rockets. Their infantry have the classic german helmet, MP40s, Panzerfausts, and their tank commanders have that spiffy hat. So, overall Green Earth probably counts mostly as German with some other random stuff thrown in.

Orange Star (Modern America), Blue Moon (Cold War USSR), and Yellow Comet (WWII Japan + Korean War copters) are much more clear, though sometimes I count Britain as part of Orange Star (Western Allies).

It's funny how outdated most of the Yellow Comet units look, but are insanely powerful under >>6345812
