I went through most of F/SN *hoping* Shinji would turn out to be a cooler character, and each route felt like a chance wasted.

Even if he died pathetically at the end, I wanted just one route where he got fed up with Zouken and went balls out with what little he had at his disposal and manipulated the shit around him with an "arrogant loser" facade for the sole purpose of giving Shirou some sort of hero moment (like coming to save Rin or whatever) and then having Shirou find that not only was she already dead, but he raped her before and after.

And then he dies in a very brief, one-sided fight with Shirou, but gives him the biggest shit faced grin all the while, one that says, "Yeah, fuck you, superhero, you didn't save shit"

Instead he turned into a meat blob and whined. Such is my relationship with Nasu's works- I keep wanting from them what isn't there.

I said it could have been interesting to see something like that happen. I didn't say that particular scenario *should* have happened, I used it as a lulzy, self-satisfying way to demonstrate how Shinji might have done *something*, even if it was in a bad end. Err ... Rin is grandmother in HF normal ending, in Fate ending we see Rin had started to wake up early so she and Shiro can walk to school as in HF true ending we get the "dont tell me I am in love with that idiot".

So that only happens in a ending were there is no more Shiro, granted Sakura waited.

I'm not actually the guy who said Shinji was cool because he was the underdog, but while I only played through the game once, I came away from each route thinking Shinji in particular was just criminally underused as a character.

He helped set-up the Sakura rape-backstory, but other than that he's just constantly set-up to be the generic fall-guy villain for the other, bigger villains. At first I thought, yeah, makes sense, but as I went through the other two I just wondered why he seemed to be this strange parallel of Rin (and Shirou, I guess), but the plot point never went anywhere. I half-expected him to eventually stab Zouken in the back (literally) in HF and fuck things up even more, but his entire character felt like Nasu just needed some guy to be villainous enough to move the plot forward, but enough of a loser to never be important.

Just felt cheap compared to even other side-characters (with less screen time) Nasu gave memorable to awesome scenes to, whereas Shinji is only remembered for rape and meatblob when his character easily could have been more.
