6202021 No.6202021 [Reply] [Original]

How boring is the Maikaze Touhou anime for non-Touhou fans? Is it watchable for people just taking it easy, or is it mind-numbingly boring? To be honest, even I was a little bored with it, but I still want to know who stole Reimu's donation box!

I want to show this for an "show non-mainstream anime" event but don't want to bore everyone to death.

Also, general Maikaze anime discussion thread, its status (hear a main problem right now is voice-acting negotiations, but not canceled), and whether the chacters from the original trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8NzFHtdZjA)) such as Yuyuko, Alice, and Komachi will make it in the series.

It was mind-numbingly boring, it's like a bunch of bored people watching slice of life from the point of view of boring people, the show itself already asumes you know the characters so it doesn't make any kind of introduction/development and just drags on with slow talk and a couple asspull spellcards

sort of this really. For fans you could sort of appreciate some of the ideas they tried, but then get really fucking annoyed at how misplaced some of the characters are... I mean Marisa is playing the straight man to Reimu and Aya.

I can't imagine it interesting non-fans too much unless it really kicks off the incident with something more interesting then looking about and gets some spell card duels and bullshit going on.

Right now it's a step above a nico video. Maybe that's what they were going for.

It seems to be a typical trend on /jp/ to have increasingly negative opinions of things as a whole as time goes on. This can be seen with a lot of formerly beloved things like FSN. People were a lot more positive about this episode when it was released, with a lot of "shockingly it doesn't suck" comments.

Of course, it could be a different set of anons and our original friends have already moved/passed on...;_;

The art was the least of it's problems. Touhou (at least as far as canon is concerned) has a fair amount to do with action, conflict, and typically supernatural incidents.

The anime provides us with 22 minutes of very slow paced conversation, silly jokes, fanon personalities, and a very lack luster confrontation between reimu and patchouli.

As a matter of fact, I don't think like that. Even if I cease to be interested, I still make sure to remember the enthusiasm I had when I first loved it. Recently there has been more and more disgruntled anime fans starting to hate on what they used to love; it's a shame.

Right now I'm talking about first impressions. It doesn't matter whether people will look back on it to see the flaws. The only thing that matters is whether it'd be too boring for first-time viewers in a casual laid-back setting or would it stand out as way more boring than other random animes shown.

Its double boring, its not interesting as a "touhou anime", and its not interesting as the closest other genre of anime, slice of life. People who like touhou at least know who the hell everyone is and can understand some of the jokes, but to a non-touhoufriend, its inside jokes wrapped in boring. It isnt hard to understand.

I fucking hate toohoo and everything it stands for.
Maikaze's anime was fucking awesome. Watched that ep like a million times. Art, animation, vocals, characters/personalities, fighting, everything was such high quality and fit together flawlessly. The atmosphere is great. I'd say it was refreshing. It looks and sounds much more natural than any other anime these days, actually any anime period.

While one could make an argument for it not being drawn well, I feel there's more to it that that. At the risk of sounding cliche, it has character. It feels like you could reach out and touch it.

>>6202104
Reactions like these make it lively and fun, while they dont really take focus away from what's going on. Rather than requiring some kind of silly joke, they follow naturally to what's already there, seamlessly integrated.

I could rave about it for hours, seriously.
Regardless of it being toohoo or not, you can see the creators took great care making it and put a lot of work into it. I do like some of the characters though, so I guess that helped, although that's more what they evolved to be than what Zun might have intended them to be.

In the original trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8NzFHtdZjA you can see that they clearly intended to have much more action scenes, with Master Spark and Sakuya's Gate of Gensokyo and Youmu Slash. I attributed that to Marisa being sleep-deprived or something, considering she'd said Aya had kept her up the whole night before.

>> No.6204200

>>6202104

Read through some of the secondary materials for Touhou. Marisa isn't always a huge troublemaker. Sometimes she's actually pretty down to earth, and sometimes Reimu is the one that gets all up in arms about stuff.

Don't assume that just because a character is known to do a certain thing that it is going to be the only way they can possibly react to something. Otherwise you're basically asking for a one dimensional character, which a lot of the better developed Touhou characters really are not.

Really, the only character that struck me as being really off-base was Sakuya, who only showed her nice side, and none of her sociopath side. It would have been nice to see at least some hints of that.

Also, considering how few people worked on it, it is actually pretty impressive. Animation is a ton of work to even produce a pile of drivel. Let alone something you could call "passable". I think if it had handled spell card duels better, milked the spell card declarations less, and had less drama about the incident, it would have been better.

Afterall, when has anyone in the entire series EVER gotten all "serious business" about an incident? Sure, Reimu might be a bit invested, but either way it is less something people get dramatic about, and more something they go "oh shit yeah, time to shoot some bitches up and have some fun whilst also solving some minor problem".

And that was the problem with it. If they hadn't made the donation box such a big dramatic deal at the end, then I would have enjoyed it more.

And to answer OP's question: I am a very rabid fan, and I was a bit bored. I enjoyed myself, but I couldn't help thinking "DO SOMETHING" the whole time. Less eventful than fucking k-on.

Even though she has a sinister backstory, she has always been shown to be a loyal servant of Remilia who is exactly as her job description says: head maid. In both SSiB and Three Fairies, she basically just assisted Remilia with whatever she wanted. No sociopathy.

And she was shown to be on the attack with her knives in the original trailer, possibly for the second episode.

No, really over blown psychotically sociopathic Sakuya is fanon. It was one of the main points behind her route in TH9, that she couldn't connect well with humans.

Keep in mind that this is a person who uses human blood and body parts to feed what amounts to two man-eating monsters. And she definitely shifts between "air headed maid" and "Ima gonna stab you now because my vampire told me to"

Also, here is the definition, since I'm starting to think you guys don't know what sociopath means.

–noun Psychiatry .

Yeah. Point is: that side of her personality doesn't come across at all in the anime. In fact, honestly, how she is presented in the anime doesn't reflect ANY of her canon apperances. She's not a sly trickster with an air for the dramatic like in CoLA. She doesn't smack talk before stabbing like in EoSD. Sakuya, in most her appearances, at least TRIES to come off as a bad-ass. Even when she's acting the part of the perfect elegant maid, she at least has something to say. Here, not so much. She's just kinda.... there.

>> No.6204255

Well, that's because she's in SDM talking to SDM people, of course she's going to be more demure. She will probably get more serious if she's talking to enemies in a fight, which, again, is what was shown in the original trailer and possibly planned for episode 2.

You could literally have put any of the fairy maids in her role and you wouldn't have even noticed.

And that is the problem. This is Touhou. There are somewhere around a hundred characters in the series. What faith should people have that they can handle doing justice to a large number of characters if they can't even properly explore five characters? Its basically a recipe for disappointment.

Yes, they were side characters, but again, any good writer would be able to explore five characters at least somewhat in an entire episode. And is it really a wise idea making half your cast throwaway characters?

Like I said, I liked it, but it really felt like they didn't know what they were doing. If they ever make another episode, or another attempt, I really will look forward to watching it. I just think if they are going to bother putting a character in an episode, they should do something other than being part of the scenery. They have a wealth of material to work with and they aren't using it (so far).
