First, start with Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.

Go find a download of it, then find a download of the english patch.

From there, work your way up to 12.

Use the Touhou wiki to for english patches and character bios.

Go to places like dagobah.biz and Nicovideo or Youtube to start getting into the music/flashes (DON'T LET ANYONE TELL YOU THAT ANY OF THE FLASHES ARE SHIT. That is for you to judge. You will soon get to know IOSYS and TETLA POT. [I WILL SAY AGAIN, DON'T LET ANYONE TELL YOU THAT THEY ARE SHIT FLASHES, you are the judge of that.)

Don't forget all the spinoffs like Super marisa land and other stuff. The Touhou wiki has a list of spinoff games as well. (AS A REMINDER, DON'T LET THE TROLLS TELL YOU WHAT GAMES ARE GOOD, AND WHAT GAMES ARE BAD.)

Cirno is the main playable character of Fairy Wars. Find a download for it. It plays differently from the rest of the games though, you freeze the bullets.

My personal opinion is that 6 is the one to start with, but 7 will actually show you your hitbox, so that you understand the mechanics faster. Either one is fine, really.

why not? they are the only ones where you can beat games on normal without going partially insane in progress and even allows to beat Extra with few tries, not insane amount of tries (see: MoF). LLS & MS are perfectly fine shmups with great soundtracks, I love them.

Nah, seeing hitbox is overrated. I can clear IN, PCB and EoSD on hard modo, and I rarely even pay close attention to where Reimu flies. I look at incoming shots few cm around her and tap my fingers accordingly.

However, I went to the touhou wiki, and made a list of all the characters and a basic description of them, and any memes associated with them. Then I browsed Gelbooru (touhou) trying to figure out which character was which in every picture, referring to the list if I couldn't figure it out.

Touhou 6 is really the best one to start with since it's the first of the PC games. Personally for a beginner, the difficulty in Touhou 8 is probably the best.

Play the Windows games.

A lot of people recommend 6, but I personally find it to be old with uninteresting patterns.

I'd recommend 7 for being more or less balanced with little game mechanic distractions, though many hit a wall with stage 4 when starting with this one.

8 is one of the easier games on Normal, but the deathbomb timing will create bad habits later on.

9 isn't a regular game like the others.

I don't like 10 much, but it's good for teaching you to not be too afraid of bombing. Lots of streaming, which is beginner friendly. The only problem is that lives are based on score, and scoring in MoF isn't easy for a beginner.

I recommend 11, but everybody complains that it's way too hard, which I guess may be the case on Normal, but certainly not for Hard/Lunatic.

12 would be surprisingly good for beginners if it weren't for the UFO shenanigans. You may or may not appreciate the added distraction if you are just trying to learn.

Play Normal unless you get frustrated, then it's ok to play Easy. If you suck at that, then you might as well quit and go straight to being a secondary.

TIPS FOR SOMEONE NEW TO TOUHOU

Play the games. Perfect Cherry Blossom or Mountain of Faith are good places to start. Don't get discouraged, take it one stage at a time.

A "secondary" is a fan of Touhou who doesn't play the games but instead exclusively consumes auxiliary material like doujin manga and IOSYS flashes. These people are loathed by other fans for their disregard for canon facts and failure to appreciate the source material.
