I played 2kki English the other day. The atmosphere is more or less the same but the mapping and flow design is mediocre.

In Yume Nikki you can just walk forward and reach every Worlds there is. In 2kki it's branched and your travel more often stopped at big world with dead end/no return, or the equivalent of Toriningen. Waste of time.

It's worth checking but not worth to be claimed as unofficial sequel.

>>5812971
Well, to be fair, there are a lot of dead ends in Yume Nikki too (Uboa's world, FACE, Mars and so on). It's just that as Yume 2kki is a lot bigger (and unfinished at the moment), you seem to find them more often.
I don't understand the parts where you said that more branched paths = bad, too, but I guess that's opinion (and I see how you can hate it, as my slight OCD forces me to check every possibility before moving on).

by the way walls of text
And check out the most recent versions, if I recall correctly that one in English is pretty old and the English in it is pretty Google Translator-like.

Yume2kki's link was already posted, although you can find it at the same uploader too.

And yeah, I greatly recommend them, at least for the "I like to explore and find things" feeling. I don't know if these fangames are good or not, but I enjoyed Yume Nikki and I'm enjoying them even more than it, actually... possibly because by the time I started playing YN, 4chan had already discovered everything. They all cost money and are made by faggots, though.

The Graveyard is a straight line walking simulator with a folk song at the end and then if you paid for it you might die.

The Path is extremely shitty but is probably the most like Yume Nikki of the games you mentioned. It costs far more than it should, however, and as I said the developers are pretentious cunts who WANT you to think their game is like Yume Nikki. Thing is, Yume Nikki wasn't really a great game, but at least it was sincere. The western indie game scene doesn't know the meaning of the word "sincere".

As for Flower, that one might be fun, but it's really nothing like Yume Nikki. Also you need a PS3 for it. So, etc.

Enjoy not playing anything, then.
Even so, try giving yume2kki and .flow at least a chance before saying that. I know Kikiyama is an amazing guy who came up with Yume Nikki out of nowhere and inspired people to try making their own Yume Nikki-like games, but that doesn't mean all games that were not made by him suck. That's like saying you can't play any danmaku (or more specifically Touhou) games that were not made by ZUN, and thus missing how good (or at least interesting) CtC is.

Cool thing to do on Yume2kki:
1. Get 800 yen or whatever the currency was there by killing things or finding them around. Doesn't matter, just get eight coins.
2. Go to the little town with the nice music (shortest way there is marijuana goddess world -> left until you see characters walking around then up until you see an entrance, go inside -> down one screen and right one screen -> go past the dam -> continue walking along the only way until you get there)
3. Go into the entrance at the leftmost part of the map
4. Use the lantern if you want to see what's around, but it doesn't really matter - just go left until you change maps
5. Inside this bar, sit on one of those things until the ghost gives you a drink (this is where the money comes in) and drink it (with Z, if I'm not mistaken).
6. Get down and sit there again, taking another drink.
7. Repeat until you spend all those 800 yen.

Also, some people think that the whole story of the original is a dream, due to the backgrounds of the balcony, the TV, the secret entrance you get by going to sleep again, and those things at the end. I don't like the rape theory, seems too pedestrian; you can find sexual imagery in anything if you reach for it. (I will admit the pole rubber is pretty straightforward though...)

What about all the traffic imagery? The roadkill dude? Monoko's response to the stoplight? The motor noise ambience on the road with the eyes? I think some sort of horrific traffic accident was involved.

That's just one part of the game though, it could be a lot of small things that turned her into a wreck.

That's actually understandable, when I first played Yume Niki I absolutely HATED the game and didn't understand what's all the fuss about. Boring, like you said, with no goal. I enjoyed it much more after I got me a walkthrough, and slowly began to understand that this game has other things than gameplay to offer. Imagination and Interpretation are what matters when playing Yume Nikki. So yeah, not everyone likes to imagine what the game displays, they just want to play a game. Maybe Yume 2kki is better at that, at least I think so.

Yeah the traffic imagery is very strong.

I don't think you can pin down any one thing as a unifying element that explains the rest of it in a coherent way, nor is it intended to be seen in that kind of way either. It's a dream, random lumps of metal imagery all loosely connected with no rhyme or reason.

About all you can say for sure about Madotsuki is that she had a traumatic experience with travel, the scenes depicting travel such as the road kill forest\train on mars\spaceship crash\train ride to the forest are all some of the strongest and most blunt imagery.

Aside from that we know she likes video games.

Beyond that everything is speculation. While some stuff is fairly easy to agree upon such as some kind of social anxiety (evidenced by the prominent faces on absolutely everything and how much stuff "watches" you), some stuff is somewhat subjective (Madotsuki is only a murderous psychopath if you make her one) and other scenes\items are more difficult to interpret at all.

For example, the things you get the hair items off of look like turds with big red lips. I reckon that represents a self image problem she has, that no matter what she does to change how she looks she feels like she's always going to be an ugly shit.

That's just me though.

Poniko is probably what Madotsuki's vision of a perfect person is, and Uboa is what she believes herself to be. That one world with all the limbs and eyes probably represents her struggle into finding her own beauty. Idk, it was that theory I had in mind when I played this game.

>Poniko is probably what Madotsuki's vision of a perfect person is
Poniko is probably just a girl that Madotsuki idolized, since the blonde hair becomes an equip.
I'd even say it's possible that they were even friends at some point, because she knows what the inside of her room looks like.
Remember that Poniko lives in a very isolated location, and if that's any reflection of Poniko's personality, I'd think that she would get along well with Madotsuki.
It's also possible that Madotsuki just admired her from a distance because she seemed like herself-- alone, a foreigner.
This seems more suitable because Poniko doesn't respond to Madotsuki in any way.

>Uboa is what she believes herself to be
I disagree. The two possibilities that would explain Poniko's horrible shift in form is that Poniko was a friend that betrayed her, or she's merely reflection of Madotsuki's fears of betrayal.
If it's true that Poniko and Madotsuki were never friends and she just admired her from a distance, I'd say this would be the main reason that kept her from trying to make friends to begin with-- that fear of betrayal.
I personally believe that she was just someone she idolized. If she had been a friend that betrayed her, I don't think that the display of her "true form" would have been something so rare-- it would have been a more prominent event or theme.

Or, maybe you're closer. I'm probably going a little bit too far.

I'm not so sure about that area, but I do think that Madotsuki's body image was a large theme in the game.
Originally, the way to get the "fat" equip was to find the mirror in the red maze.

I also think the Toriningen were too. They could represent the people who have harmed Madotsuki. Perhaps they are to blame why she entraps herself in her room, since you are teleported to a secluded area. She could also be afraid of people that haven't brought harm to her. Maybe the reason why she is capable of killing, er, the "citizens of her dream world" is because she's paranoid.

Well, I do think that they're representative of girls that were harmful to her in one way or another, and -meant- to be. If you're near them, they go out of their way to hurt you.
I think it's especially obvious in the picnic scene in the white desert. It's a typical clique of girls.
