Hikikomoris constitute a challenge to social order and a negative mark on modern Japanese culture.

They exist because people are just plain falling out of society; the reason they don't have jobs is because they don't possess the basic ability of talking to people and making arrangements.

In order to remedy their condition, you have to put a lot of effort into (re)building their simplest functions from the ground up; if you don't step up to the challenge then they just stay as-is indefinitely.

Basically the whole issue is that kids are growing up broken, they can't fix themselves, nobody else wants to fix them, and nobody wants to admit to the problems causing them to break in their developmental years. So everybody just lets the problem grow and perpetuate while trying their very hardest to sweep it under the rug (letting them stay in their rooms accomplishes this efficiently.)

Japan is also experiencing a problem similar to the US now; a major cultural shift in which the job market is changing in deep and fundamental ways.

The old way of doing things was, you'd walk into a company's office building with a pair of hands and a high school education. They'd hire you, and you'd work your way up within the company until retirement.

The new way of doing things is not only far more demanding, but also less stable. You need to work far harder in childhood to qualify yourself for a job later on, which is doing a remarkably good job of turning people into disturbed sociopaths who don't fit into society very well.

Part of the problem with hikikomori is that when you break a kid's brain, they can't fix it themselves. That means someone else has do to it for them, and parents usually aren't up to the challenge. These kids had might as well be Fritzl'd the way they look and act, but people's strategy is to expect them to "snap out of it."

This is because people think loading kids up with pills is an easy answer to any problem. If people are more careful about it, which means not treating it as if it'll work every time, then we can see better results.
