Unfortunately, the source image I was using was in an awkward resolution, and the closest thing I could fit it to was 2K as opposed to something more common like WUXGA. I'd attempt to remedy it somehow but I already dicked with the aspect ratio by like 3-4% getting it to fit 2048x1080.

I personally don't mind having a letterbox black band at the top/bottom of my screen (as that's where I put icons and whatnot), but if you center it you don't lose any of her face.

For the Kogasa vector I used Inkscape. It's pretty easy to pick up (for me at least) but the problem is it eats up memory fast and then gets unstable. I save often, though, so I never lost more than a line or two if it crashed. The upshot of it, though, is that it's free.

I've used a few different types image editing software since I work/worked as a graphic designer. (bad idea btw, it's terribly soul-draining when you spend years at a company doing nothing but drawing pie charts, line graphs, and bar graphs, and get bitched at if you try to pull something so frivolous and extravagant as a single gradient.)

Photoshop / Illustrator / Fireworks is a pretty awesome toolset, but you really gotta put in some work to learn all the ins and outs.

I don't have any experience with SAI but I hear it's pretty good.

I've also used Canvas, which I think is probably better for making diagrams as opposed to animu. I'm not terribly enthused about it in general, since the Adobe line of software sorta kicks its ass, feature wise, and is used by more places.

Give SAI a try. It's pretty fun to use and the learning curve's not too steep.

Photoshop is the best for effects and filters and whatnot, but it's just not designed with manga artists or really anyone drawing with a tablet in mind. SAI is, I have to confess I haven't really given Photoshop much of a chance, but I still prefer SAI for that kind of thing.
