The biggest reason it's called the dark ages is actually because the people of the Renaissance wanted to fell superior to the old.

But the medieval era was a time that sprung mostly from all kinds of farming societies, only with the differance of a select few peple taking advantage of other people through force, grabbing what was valuable and making them work for their own favour.
The result? Kings/kingdoms and the Nobles.
Things turned to "shit" because 97% of the people (aka farmers/peasants) got it worse wheras a select few around 3% got it significantly better.
Technological advancements doesn't care much about the fact that 97% of everyone almostlived in the mud, as long as a select few people could bring forth change then it wasn't that hard, especially with the masses providing them with food and comfort.
The real revolution both technological and people wise came when the people starting to take part of the "privileges" that the select few had gotten themselves.
And the result was a lot more evenly distributed wealth, no one was as rich as the kings before, but now most of the ordinary people had it decent, and with new mindsets introduced by the lifestyle of the select few that now everyone sought for, change began to take shape in a different direction than before, different motivations had been born, they had seen the life that could in theory be led.

It wasn't until their own people weren't enough and until they became harder to control that they started to activly look after other people to enslave.
If the tribes of Africa had gone all "screw all this, I want more than I need!" and started venturing north for further riches, then they too could have been nasty bastards with a tiny majority of rich men.
