Umineko is mostly poorly written.

The only thing that saves Umineko is its fantastic music. R07 is fairly good at writing action scenes to go along with these.

It isn't so much the contents of the scenes or the plot that is bad, it is just the way R07 tells the story that is rubbish.

The primary thing he could do would be to stop switching perspectives so often. Especially in a "mystery" (very dubious with Umineko), it's important to have a consistent viewpoint, instead of swapping between characters like they are CCTV security cameras.

It's still a good VN. But R07 has a lot of room to improve as a writer.

I have not finished Higurashi, but from what I have read, that is because Higurashi has less characters and the narrative is easier to follow. He doesn't do this shit that he does in Umineko with constantly introducing more characters.

Also, if the scenario he wrote for "Ookamikakushi" is any indicator... well, I'm not looking forward to it very much.

This would be a legitimate complaint if Umineko were a regular mystery instead of romantic fantasy fiction with a murder mystery thrown in as a plot device. He's just deliberately making things more confusing for the (debatable) fun of it.

>> No.5602574

Why Higurashi is better:
It actually make you care for the characters, even the side characters are interesting and well developed.

There is some true suspense, you read it because you really want to know what will happen next rather than just wondering how fucking stupid the next scene will be like in Umineko.

The plot doesn't try to be as "big" as Umineko yet achieve much more, Ryukishi got too much ambition for Umineko and failed.

>Higurashi is better in pretty much every areas except music.

I play Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (finished 1st episode, currently on 2nd, i'll resume playing soon).

In my opinion, it's done very poorly. Scenes about "after class games" run along whole episode 1 and dialogues are nothing to be proud of.

11. A servant must not be chosen by the author as the culprit. This is begging a noble question. It is a too easy solution. The culprit must be a decidedly worth-while person — one that wouldn't ordinarily come under suspicion.

Umineko is getting more and more retarded.
Episode 1 was still good, a decent mystery.
2 was decent, but nothing too interesting.
3 was the best, good balance between meta world and real happenings, awesome ending.
4, 5 and 6 focus more and more on the meta world, ignoring the real world, introduce far too many new characters and stupid shit.

Also Red Text is the most stupid idea in every work ever.
Rather than encouraging you to think, it just restricts your theories, which is why we only have 2 or 3 of them that are bend to somehow fit the Red text and don't make much sense overall.

Ryukishi: It’s said that the three parts of reasoning are “Who dun it”, “How dun it”, and “Why dun it”. ‘Who’ and ‘how’ are very difficult to speculate about, but the hardest part is the ‘why’. In most Japanese mystery novels, this last part is often neglected. When the culprit and the trick are discovered, the culprit resigns and confesses about how their misfortune in the past led them to murder. I’ve tried to design Umineko so that you can enjoy the ‘why’ at least a little, so I hope that you do. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that there will be clear hints pointing to the ‘why’. However, judging by EP3 and EP4, Beatrice clearly hopes that Battler will figure it out. She wants a human to figure it out. People posing a riddle do so because they want someone to solve it. In the bus on a school field trip, if one person poses a riddle and his friends say “That’s too hard, I give up. By the way…” and change the subject, wouldn’t the first person feel pretty lonely? They would want to hear “I know, it’s __” or “I don’t know, tell me the answer”. So at the very least, there can be no doubt that Beatrice is posing this riddle because she wants someone to try and solve it, and I hope that you consider what she’s feeling. After all the most perfect crime would be carried out in a forest and never exposed to anyone. What does Beatrice want out of this incident, and why is she doing it?

"She was young, dark-haired, rather good-looking, and had an excellent figure. This latter fact was instantly apparent because—and I had to look twice before I could believe what I saw—she wore a brief, skintight, one-piece bathing suit. Nothing else.
Elinor’s eyes were still on the sprawled shape on the floor.
“Father. He’s—dead?”
Garrett nodded slowly and stood up.
I heard the quick intake of her breath but she made no other sound. Then Garrett strode quickly across to the woman at the table.
“Unconscious,” he said after a moment. “Apparently a blow on the head—but she’s beginning to come out of it.” He looked again at the knife on the floor. “We’ll have to call the police.”
I hardly heard him. I was wondering why the room was so bare. The hall outside and the living room that opened off it were furnished with the stiff, formal ostentation of the overly rich. But Drake’s study, by contrast, was as sparsely furnished as a cell in a Trappist monastery. Except for the desk, the small table, the two chairs, and a three-leaf folding screen that stood in one corner, it
contained no other furniture. There were no pictures on the walls, no papers, and although there were shelves for them, no books. There wasn’t even a blotter or pen on the desk top. Nothing but the phone, desk lamp and, strangely enough, a roll of gummed paper tape."

Alright then, Episode 3: Get Episodier. Taking events in order...

The First Twilight: Nanjo, on the orders of his accomplices who are currently keeping the debate between the siblings going strong, uses one of the sharp and heavy paperweights from Kinzo's study to kill all of the other servants. He then places the keys to each room in envelopes in a cycle among the rooms to create the closed room circle, and pockets one of the master keys. Probably Kumasawa or Genji's. I forget which room the siblings go to second after finding Shannon.

Regardless, Nanjo is the only person who can conceivably have carried out this crime. With the rest of the servants dead, he's the only person left who can actually differentiate the keys, which we were told in Episode 1 are all unlabeled. He's also one of the only suspects who could have known where Kinzo's corpse was (Krauss and Natsuhi being the others, but I'm removing them from suspicion for reasons to be discussed later). His accomplices MIGHT have helped, since the siblings took a few breaks as the night went on, but it isn't necessary.

Now then, with a master key in his pocket, Nanjo is called in to examine Shannon. He takes the master key in her pocket, leaving him with two. Being the only person who can recognize the keys, he tells the siblings where the key in the envelope is leading them, and stays behind, saying he wants to examine Shannon a bit longer. When the siblings leave to go to the next room, Nanjo slips out and makes his way to one of the other rooms, using the master key to let himself in, and puts the extra master key in the victim's pocket. He uses Shannon's key to lock the room back up, and catches up with the siblings.

By this method, the red is not violated, because all the keys pertaining to the closed rooms are all indeed locked inside those rooms. Just not at the same time... This differs from Battler's theory slightly, since his blue theory as it was stated, would be beaten by the red.

Moving on... Battler mentioned at some point in Episode 2 or 3 (I forget which) that the 'Wolves and Sheep' puzzle on Rokkenjima is a little different from the one in the book, since the wolves can attack even if the numbers are even.

Bearing that in mind, we can state that neither Eva nor Rosa is a wolf, since if either of them were, the other would have been left dead in the vault when they found the gold. By this line of reasoning, even though Eva did sneak out to talk to Rosa in the garden, Rosa would still have been alive when they parted.

After Eva left, however, the big bad wolf came to visit... in the form of Rudolph. Rudolph was told by Kyrie that Eva and Rosa had most likely solved the Epitaph. Kyrie was close, but she couldn't solve it on her own without insider knowledge of Kinzo's life, so she gave the siblings enough hints to solve it on their own. After having Nanjo kill off the servants to isolate the family, she also left a letter warning them to solve the Epitaph.

Rudolph was sent out to interrogate Rosa about the gold, but she wouldn't talk, or maybe she fought back. She was disarmed quickly, and fell onto the fence spike. Rudolph, in his panic to cover his tracks, strangled Maria and then ran back to the guesthouse to tell everyone he found them dead.

Second Twilight: done. Wolves: Rudolph, Kyrie, Nanjo.

I should point out that Maria is not really a factor in the wolves and sheep calculation, since she is too small and weak to take much action to defend herself or harm others.

On to the third... Since Eva is sick she can't be convinced to leave the mansion, so Kyrie instead decides to isolate Hideyoshi next. During the search for Rosa and Maria, Kyrie found a cigarette butt in Eva's room, so she knows Eva left and had Hideyoshi cover for her.

So, she proposes that a group make a run on the mansion for food, and as hoped fat boy Hideyoshi is all over that idea. Once they reach the mansion, she and Rudolph threaten Hideyoshi about Eva's absence and try to coerce him to telling them where the gold is. Hideyoshi resists, and bullets start flying. Rudolph and Hideyoshi are killed, and Kyrie is shot as well, but she lives (for the time being).

At around this time, George gets it in his head that he needs to go see Shannon's corpse. He sets his cup of coffee on the floor, and jumps out the second story window. Nanjo hears him go, picks up the coffee cup and locks the window back up.

As he's shutting the window, he sees Kyrie making her way back to the guesthouse, or else she signals him in his room in some way (tossing pebbles at his window perhaps). He goes downstairs and lets her in while Eva is in the bathroom. The two of them strangle Krauss and Natsuhi, who are sitting on the couch dozing off. The bodies are quickly dragged to the arbor, and Nanjo goes back into his room. He tells Kyrie about George heading to the mansion before he parts with her.

Kyrie is needed to kill Krauss and Natsuhi, since by any other calculation there would be more sheep than wolves. Strangling two people at the same time would be hella hard anyway.

Anyway, while Eva and the others are discovering that George is gone, and finding Krauss and Natsuhi, Kyrie heads back and kills George. She writes the PIN number on the door, hoping to intimidate the survivors and cast suspicion on Battler (I can't really explain why she would know the PIN outside of pure speculation. Maybe Nanjo found out from one of the other servants and told her). She then goes back to playing dead.

Eva and company make it into the mansion, find George, and the party is split up after Eva's gun goes off, blinding Jessica.

Anyway, this is where my theory is a little shaky. Since Nanjo is a wolf, Jessica by all rights should be dead when Battler and Eva find her. She is pretty much helpless however, so maybe Nanjo just wasn't in any hurry.

Or maybe Jessica is a wolf. I have trouble seeing her working with Kyrie though. Well, anyway...

Nanjo leaves Jessica in the parlor and goes off, possibly in search of a gun. When he finds Kyrie however, she has apparently decided that Nanjo is a liability. Or maybe she realized that Nanjo lied to her and her wound is actually a fatal one. She kills him, and then finally dies from her injury.

Eva, after finding Nanjo dead as well, decides that there must be another person on the island, and that Battler must be working with them, and shoots him, believing it to be in self defense. She then flees back to Kuwadorian, allowing her to survive the explosion in the mansion.

So that's it, pretty much. I kept things brief, but if there's a problem I can probably clarify or explain things away.

Nanjo's trick could be done easier, actually.
First option: Kinzo's corpse was in the boiler room, and from ep1 we know that it has a back door without lock, which leads to the courtyard, so it's not locked room in the first place.
Second: if, by any chance, we can't use it, there's still a possibility. Shannon's corpse will be discovered first in almost any scenario. Why? Because it was in the parlor on the first floor, that has a nice window we can break and enter, while other corpses were on higher floors, basement or even at the chapel. So the culprit, Nanjo or someone else, could have quickly put master key in her pocket when they found her.

>> No.5605276

>>5604470
You mixed up a timeline a little. First they found the gold and talked. Then Eva returned to the guesthouse with fever and went to her room with Hideyoshi. Then Maria started a tantrum, so Rosa decided to take her to the garden. (Actually, I think that someone could have told Maria to do so, because of her kihihis, when Rosa agreed). When they began search for Rosa and Maria, Eva and Hideyoshi were in their room, so Kyrie couldn't have taken the cigarette butt during this time. Maybe she picked it up when Eva was solving epitaph or maybe she thought that Hideyoshi went outside to smoke and could have seen Rudolf at work.

I'm assuming for the sake of argument that the boiler room has a lock, and the line in Episode 1 refers to the surface entrances to the mansion. But yes, it could have been done easier if the boiler room doesn't lock. It just makes the red rather hard to swallow.

>>5605276
I believe it was implied that Kyrie found the cigarette during the search for Rosa and Maria, since Eva and Hideyoshi helped look as well. To put things in order:

*Eva and Rosa return to the guesthouse after finding the gold. Kyrie (presumably) notices they've been absent for a while and gets suspicious.

*Eva gets a fever and lies down.

*Rosa and Maria go out to the garden.

~At some point after they leave, Hideyoshi has time to smoke a cigarette. Or he smoked it while Eva and Rosa were finding the gold. It's possible Eva never left the room, but the intentional ambiguity of the red makes it more likely she went to talk to Rosa.

*The rest of the family notice Rosa and Maria are missing, and begin searching for them. This is the only real time Kyrie could have found the cigarette, so presumably Eva and Hideyoshi came out to help look.

*Rudolph goes out to look for Rosa and Maria, and returns to report finding them dead.

~Time passes. Eva is lying down again for the most part. Shouldn't be much opportunity for Kyrie to come in and find the cigarette.

*Kyrie suggests they go to the mansion to get some food. Rudolph agrees, and Hideyoshi tags along as well.

I'm assuming the money in those cases was left behind by Kinzo for his servants and family. He left it up to 'Beatrice' to determine the appropriate time to distribute that money.

The best guess I can come up with for Episode 3 is that Nanjo or Kyrie found out the PIN somehow (maybe when they killed whoever was entrusted with it) but didn't know the significance of it. So they wrote it on the door to see if any of the survivors knew what it meant. Or to cast suspicion on Battler, since the first 4 numbers are his birthday.

I don't know, from his characterization he seems to be not that kind of man for such thing. He'd probably not leave them even a cent if he could.
Nanjo's son said that he saw "at least 20" other cells highlighted green for that PIN. Then again, maybe he's lying, but I doubt it. He said it was probably 100 millions, 20x100=2 billion is a pretty good money, especially for the money-striving relatives.

Maybe I've been following Battler's presumed script for these events too much.

Still, Kyrie wound up with that cigarette SOMEhow. The particulates of how notwithstanding, Eva left the room at least once, Hideyoshi was tensed up so he smoked a cigarette to relax, and at some point after that, but before they left for the mansion, Kyrie got into the room and took that cigarette butt. So clearly, Eva and Hideyoshi left the room at least once more so that Kyrie could go in and take it. Or else she went in and pocketed it without them noticing.

I've assumed that Eva left to talk to Rosa in the garden due to the fact that the damn narration said as much (EVA-Beatrice approached them just after Eva left and pretty much said 'You know what, I changed my mind. The gold is all mine'.) If you want to deny that Eva went to talk to them, fine. But it doesn't actually change anything important. All that matters is that Eva wasn't the one to kill Rosa and Maria.

Thing is: All of the siblings are strapped for cash. They are extorting each other, maybe even killing each other, over whatever money is left in Kinzo's name. None of them have the means to fill cases with billions of yen and give them out. The Sumadera's might, but if they have THAT much money to blow, why do they care about Kinzo's gold so badly in the first place?

The only person who could realistically set that up is Kinzo. That said, it's possible for someone else if that money is counterfeit, or only a few had money inside them or something.

It's something that hasn't been mentioned since, so I don't think it's significant.

I did, however, theorize once that the real Kyrie is dead, and Kasumi has taken her place. She has Ange hostage, so Rudolph can't act.

The boat ticket was left in her pocket after she chartered a boat a day or two earlier, at which time she moved Kyrie's body to the island, in the care of her accomplice there. She can then simply duck out of sight after committing the first twilight, and leave Kyrie's body with the other victims.

She's then free to commit the murders any way she likes and completely dodges the red. After all: It's not a body double, it's the real Kyrie's corpse. Since Kyrie was dead before the game began, it doesn't violate the number of people on the island. She's already on the island with the rest, so it's not like an outsider comes ashore after the game starts.

I ultimately dismissed this because it seems too implausible, and it all hinges on a single vague clue- that ticket which we only saw in Episode 3.

–It felt as though you had detectives in mystery novels very firmly in mind when you created Erika.

Ryuukishi: That’s right. Her character shares many traits that were maliciously extracted from those held by great detectives. With sealing the doors and the like, she is unlike Battler in that she’s a hard worker, or maybe you could say she puts a lot of effort into her plans…… People vary on whether they like or dislike Erika. While Battler’s enemies before now have specialized in confusing him, Erika comes at him from the exact opposite direction, and I think this leads to a different kind of battle than the ones we’ve seen so far. I hope this becomes a new light to shine on the riddle-filled world of Umineko. It seems that some of our users have wondered “Did he use her as a representative of users who write malicious theories?”, but I leave such interpretations up to you. Umineko’s focus on battles every time is part of the world’s layout, so we must have a character who stands in clear opposition to Battler. So, if Erika had been a normal person, perhaps the battle and the tale wouldn’t have become so exciting. Though I think Erika herself is just bad at choosing her words and not really such a bad person.

Clearly, he's talking about her image in the game, so it doesn't matter if she 'existed' or not in the real world.
