Point weapons outreach slashing weapons, inflict deadlier wounds with less force, are more difficult to block, are better at penetrating armor, are easier to produce, are easier to maintain, and finally are lighter weight.

Of course there are downsides as well. For instance, if your opponent is very close to you, it is difficult to maneuver the point to stab them. Unless you carry a dagger in your off hand.
