It's medieval dark fantasy, a lot like ASOIAF.

There's almost no magic in the first chapters or so, except for the ships, and they're barely noticeable at that. There's a surprising lack of merry little elves, spellcasters don't run around throwing lightning at each other, there aren't any wizards in castles to my knowledge, and it reads a lot like Jane Eyre in some chapters.

It's really only in the last book that shit starts getting magical. A single dragon appears, which may turn you off. But she doesn't run around blazing up towns, or eating humans. In fact, she rescues some of them.

But that's because I grew up with Lord Of The Rings and the Hobbit.

I really lose myself in books that are all about some drunken dwarves, wise old fucking wizards, badass Men who kill lots of shit, strange and fierce Dark Gods, magic swords, Hippie Elves, orcs, goblins, trolls, and fucking DRAGONS.

Then they all go and strap on their armor, grab their swords and shields, gather into massive armies, and thrash the SHIT out of each other! God damn, I just came.

The Hobbit was better than The Lord of the Rings. For many reasons. LOTR was still a good read, though. Even if Tolkien did over-do a bit, what with the entire pages dedicated to describing a sword.

The problem is that the Tolkien Rehashers tried out-doing him at being extremely detailed, creating an original language, and so on. Which does NOT make for good reading.

The best Fantasy writers Post-Tolkien have been the ones who threw all that boring shit out the window, and instead just wrote a great romp through swords and sorcery, or the ones who write a compelling story involving character conflict, motives, and other subplots instead of "hurr, I'll talk about this sword for the next few pages".

You should read fantasy by Norwegian authors aimed at teenagers. Probably some of the worst literature ever.

But yeah, I see where you're coming from.
Silmarillion was interesting, but at times, incredibly boring. I guess Tolkien got off at creating huge family trees, fuckloads of lore and ancient languages. He was a great writer though, and very original at his time, which is probably why he got away with it.
On the other hand, I thoroughly enjoyed the Discworld series, just because of the ridiculousness of it all.
