And I agree with the first statement. Touhou is something I enjoy, but I find the majority of its fandom either dumb or annoying in some way. Just take a look at some of the Touhou threads we have here - "which Touhou would you like to fuck", "guys why can't I go to Gensokyo", roleplaying, and so on. I know they're just having fun, but I find that kind of fun as dumb as those kids who do shit just to see people annoyed. Then again, fun is yet another subjective thing.

I like the games. I've liked them for several years now. I have no idea what the story of the games are, nor do I have any idea what the fanon is. I just play for the bullet shooting.

I am a secondary fan. I'm not a huge fan; I couldn't identify five of the girls by name/face, but when I saw the Love that went into so many of the fan videos and fan art I decided to find out what I could about it, and I think it's awesome that fans have this kind of imagination and affection for the series.

I don't know a lot of fellow otaku, and the otaku who are worth my company are not the self-hating types (though I've got plenty of elitist otaku friends) because although I fully understand the "nothing is any good if other people like it" (quote from Diesel Sweeties), it's a tiresome way to go through life.

So, I encourage you to stop trying to hate on fans who don't play the bullet-hell shmups. The fact that I have bought two danmaku games (which I don't much play; they're neat, but I haven't had the reflexes or free time of a fourteen-year-old for a couple decades now) and many dozen dojin and music CDs featuring Toho Project works means I'm supporting your fandom.

I support it because it's fun, and because the love that the fans have is a beautiful and deep thing.
