Hey /jp/

Pretty new to Touhou. What Touhou is the hardest? Which is the easiest?

I dunno about hardest, but easiest HAS to be PCB. I just played it for the first time today. I knew none of the spells of the characters. I 1CC'ed it first try on normal with the first Sakuya shot. I mean, between barriers and 4 bombs per life I really couldn't fail...

PCB may be easy, but the most forgiving is IN. So long as you got a decent amount of time counters in the early levels, you can use continues fairly often without fear of hitting a game over.

Hardest is probably SA just because it's a bit too different. That and it's pretty hard to get extra lives.

Most frustrating is UFO because of the damn UFO system.

Huh I certainly didn't find IN to be as easy as PCB. I mean I definitely didn't 1CC it on my first try heh. It just seemed to me in PCB that the only thing you needed to do for like 90% of the game was stream.

The super-long border of death timer when you play as reimu+yukari is what makes IN so easy.You can play as risky as you want and suffer minimal punishment.
IN is the only game i beat on Hard and Extra, while all other games i barely beat on normal.

Still haven't beaten any games on easy, but Touhou is my first top-down shooter. I'm slowly getting better, but I still can't beat shit on Normal.

The border of death mechanic doesn't matter if you can predict that you're about to get hit, or you decide to deliberately get hit to use the ultra-powerful saving bomb...which I've done a few times on Marisa/Alice. I only use Reimu/Yukari because their shot type is the only one that I actually like.

When you are trying to squeeze through some very tight bullet pattern you can not be sure if you are getting hit or not. And when you have to do it every 2 seconds its hard to react fast enough when you finally do get hit.

Easiest: Toss-up between IN and PCB. PCB has the easier patterns but the mechanics in IN make death bombing a total joke, no matter the character. Border team just makes it so that if you miss a death bomb you're either out of bombs or 100% retarded.

I can't make it to the end in the games with limited continues. I'd rather see all the levels than get the better endings, because then I'll at least know something to expect on higher difficulties.

I don't really get people, SA was the first game I beat, and I only recently 1CC'd PCB. I thought PCB's random bullet shitfest was much harder than most of SA's patterns (yes, even that fucking cat).

Probably its part motivation, I like the SA cast way more than the PCB cast. I really wanted to play SA extra for Koishi....but Ran? fuck Ran.

It's hard to say, really. If you abuse borders in PCB it can certainly take the edge off, but playing on lunatic for score is still no joke. And while EoSD is not the hardest to 1cc on lunatic, a perfect run is nearly impossible due to the rank system and randomness of the patterns.

Lunatic UFO is just terrible though.

Yet again this thread where people try to measure the difficulty of the Touhou games by how hard it is to 1cc them.

I do not feel like explaining this at length so I will leave it at this: STG difficulty is measured by how hard it is to attain a high score. A 1cc is ASSUMED, and then the countless factors that make up the scoring mechanics of a given shooter are taken into account on top of that.

Up until recently it was really debatable as to which Touhou game was the hardest to score highly in, but UFO has emerged as the single hardest touhou game because of one very simple mechanic:

If you want to take advantage of opportunities to increase your score, you must INTENTIONALLY pass up extra lives. In a well-scoring UFO run you are going to be running on very few lives and bombs the entire game, unlike the others where opportunities for score AND lives are presented at the same time.

So there: UFO is the hardest because it's the hardest to score well in. Not because it's the hardest to 1cc (it's actually one of the EASIEST to 1cc because you can do the same thing in reverse and just get tons of lives and bombs at the cost of a shitty score.)

Since when is that a rule? The only time that happens is UFO. Every other game a high score and extra lives come hand-in-hand...most you get after collecting a lot of point items, while others you get after hitting a certain score. SA is different in that the only way you can get extra lives is to survive full attacks...and most people don't like using their saving bombs on certain spellcards, so a spellcard get also counts towards your extra life count.

We're talking about difficulty to complete, as we're not scorefags like the Japanese.

I would say that the risk the player takes to get the ufos is greater in difficulty than simply foregoing extra lives and bombs. You don't die (unintentionally) in a score run and expect to be near the top anyway. At least not in a relatively easier shmup like Touhou.

I don't think most people here care about scoring systems. The only time we see people even start to care about them on /jp/ is when someone posts a thread with a contest challenge...and those aren't done very often.

And the OP was talking about being new to the game, so we're assuming they were concerned about completion only and not scoring. UFO is ridiculous in both regards because of that system, and I certainly hope that something like that is done away with in future games. It simply wasn't fun to worry about a collectible that moves around the fucking screen and occasionally changes colors.
