Most of them look pretty normal. Here's a list of the more common ones: http://www.sljfaq.org/afaq/kokuji-list.html
Also, China too has a few of those huge kanji with 50+ strokes.

My favorite kanji is probably 式
Partly because of how it looks, partly because しき sounds really cool (when said like the Japanese usually pronounce it, not as "shicky" or something), because of its connotation and meaning that is not really translatable, and probably also because of Ryougi Shiki from Kara no Kyoukai.

夢 is another favorite of mine, the thing on the pic is not mine though.

永遠 is cool, but while I like kanji-rich Japanese, I generally prefer 和語 over 漢語.

>>5304437
Lulz, I got interested in Jap media because of Chinese characters. I have no idea what I'd read with a knowledge of Chinese. I looked up what their best-selling books of all time are, and they were "The Life of Glorious Chairman Mao" and "The Poems of Glorious Chairman Mao"... not interested.
Also, sure, the Chinks of course use more 漢字, but Kana aren't really all that bad when not used in excess. Also, the PRC's character set makes each character look a lot less different from the others, which reduces reading speed, thus defeating one of the main points for me to learn them. >> No.5304627

>>5304553

I just re-read that. To clarify, kanji in isolation are rarely read as single words *using their on-reading*. Usually in those cases it's a native Japanese word. There are considerable exceptions in all cases, and rules of thumb do not get you far.

On are almost always used in compounds. You need to memorize the ones that don't. Kun are often used when the kanji is alone and also accompanies by a hiragana character if used alone. So if you see a Kanji and it's not part of a compound and followed by a hiragana, it's the kun reading.

There are loads of complicated kanjis that 90% of native speakers will be unable to read. They can seem pretty cool to people learning the language, but to natives they give a similarly pretensious feel as long latinate words in English. Katakana bastardisations of even relatively simple words are getting more and more common every year. Heck, even the names of pretty much all animals on Wikipedia are in katakana.

I once learned to write 魑魅魍魎 on a dare (easier than it looks, it just consists of parts of other kanjis). About half of Japanese people don't recognise it, and the rest can't write it. So far I've only met one Chinese person who was able to write it, and not a single soul who thought it was cool. Bawwww.
