Another theory linking Maribel to Yukari stems from the fact that there has never been an official romanization for her name マエリベリー・ハーン (Maeriberii Haan). It is possible that the ハーン in her name does not translate to "Han" but "Hearn", as in Lafcadio Hearn the Western author of Japanese horror stories. Lafcadio Hearn was known as "Koizumi Yakumo" after he gained Japanese citizenship.

This hsit is so amazing. How do you even read through all the stuff there is and then be able to pick and choose little bits and how they all fit together?

I kind of wish I was Japanese so I could pick up every touhou story ever created and read them all and understand everything. ZUN is truly an amazing writer.

I think it's neat how theres all these other stories, particularly the stpry about Maribel and Yukari that are so serious and amazingly written, yet ZUN at the same time has to ignore that storyline for his games.

I bet ZUN actually wants to work more on the real world/gensokyo story, yet he has to dumb his story down to LOL RANDOM YOUKAI REIMU BEATS THEM UP for the games, and yet those game stories are the most known ones while the true backstory of everything is infinitely more interesting.

I read this and enjoyed it for the first two pages of the forum discussion. On my third-fourth page however, I ended up raging. I'm not sure why. I think it was the mix of some yes-sayers and the sudden discussion about more and more irrelevant topics. And then the Yukari and Suwako comparison. I get that they are similar in some aspects, but that's just taking it too far. Not to mention comparing Ran to Kanako feels straight out incorrect, if not insulting to both characters. Yukari s basically the God of Gensokyo. She is by far the MOST important character in the entire series, because she CREATED the world. The human biblical figures get much screentime in the bible, and are 'basically' the main characters, yet about who is the book about? GOD. And He only acts from the side lines. Yukari is the God of Gensokyo, with Reimu and Marisa as the Biblical figures. Yukari works from the sidelines, and Reimu gets the most screentime, but it is STILL about Yukari.

Things got so bad outside that even gods and oni had to flee to its safety, due to a lack of faith or disappointment humanity.

If you consider that half of the book is about the christian god walking the earth, and lots of it pleading humanity to return to it, god could be considered to be more of a main character than just being on the sidelines.

Did Zun take the story from somewhere, or at least pieces of it?

Are there other works in which pretty much the same thing happens with one of the characters? I find it really neat, but I don't know how original it is.

I've seen it used a couple of times. It plays a part in one of Hot Dog Chuck's doujins and is the focal point for the cause of the incident in Touhou Labyrinth.

Of course, I don't know a lick of Japanese, so what they discuss over there is something I wouldn't know.

Maribel is Yukari's descendant. Just like Sanae is Suwako's descendant.

It shows up everywhere in the Wiki, and the thread seems to take a direction where they interpret extremely menial shit into great detail just to sound smart, just to have a "unique interpretation", or just for the hell of it.

I think they're different people.

Yukari hibernating for winter or Yukari just hanging out for all winter means that Maribel is either awake for a horribly long time, or she's passed out for a stupid long time, and missing her psychology classes. Of course, she could just do her normal sleep schedule, just without anyone around, but then what's the point of even mentioning that Yukari disappears for winters?

The reason is obviously because her real-life counterpart is a bear.

Yukari disappears, because in hibernation, the bear's mind is nearly entirely inactive, and it doesn't dream. Not being able to enter Gensokyo through dreams, Yukari simply disappears while the bear rests.

Everytime he write a book, he's ignoring the games for storyline. He doesn't "dumb his story down", he makes the story fit what he thinks the game should be about and what it should feel like. Important backstories that are immediate to what's happening are mentioned in the character profiles.

Mary sees Gensokyo in her dreams, due to her ability. I can see how this could be interpreted as Gensokyo being Mary's dream, but it's nothing concrete.

Well that's what the "Maribel becomes Yukari" theory hinges on. One night she dreams herself even farther back into the past and decides it's real and welp now border girl is stuck in Japan 1000+ years ago. It makes a lot more sense than them being each other in parallel, or one dreaming the other world etc. I mean the story sets up that exact possibility happening.
