All the porn stores are populated by people you can't tell apart from the average tokyo white collar guy or your average student, and also it's still a electronics district you have to remember that the whole anime thing has only been a big thing very recently in akiba's history.

Also now it's a bit of a tourist trap, there's lots of foreigners there during the day that might not have anything to do with anime since lots of guide books and even the official government website lists it as "a great place for electronics shopping" and as a result there's quite a few duty free shops.

I remember my first time going into one of these places (melonbooks under Hey! Taito to be exact) and thinking to myself the contrast to a porn shop say in america. The clerks for example are just like any other clerk and the whole place is like you're just buying a carton of milk or something, everyone is shuffling around normally while screens above their heads is having some loli being blasted with semen and there are 2D titties everywhere. No one is all like "right on brother lets be all open about our sexuality" like your stereotypically gay western porn shop clerk. It really highlighted the whole "you do your best to be subtle about it and we'll do our best to ignore it" thing they have going on over there, things like this are tolerated because all parties do their best to keep it to themselves and out of their participation with society in general.
