I guarantee there'd be studies done on the game (especially once things even 'possibly' related started happening) proving it can - and in many cases does - have an effect on the user's mentality after a certain period of time. Especially thanks to that VR shit they use, at the very least I'm sure it causes eye issues.

As for specific things like the comas and all that, you could easily link that with the rest. Law is a lot more loose (in a bad way, like a whore) than you'd expect and makes it easy for things to get banned or at least financially fucked up.

I don't remember much about .hack other than Sign - which I barely remember too, I never really liked the games much (too much fake grindan in the same repetitive dungeons) and the other series were kinda bleh. I wanted to get further in the story but it was too much effort and didn't all come with awesome music.
