I don't see why not. Getting a job in translation is a lot better than being a true NEET, and you gain the weeaboo benefits as well. I would consider majoring in Japanese if I didn't already have other plans.

I say go for it! A good way to motivate yourself is to make a blog about your progress in learning japanese!

Meh, if you actually have the inclination and skills to translate, there's no reason it wouldn't be a decent career. Just don't try it if you can't already write well in English or don't have the will to put tons of work into it, both learning the language and translating larger texts. It doesn't really pay exceptionally well, either, but if it's what you enjoy, then go for it.

How much Japanese do you know now?
I think you should read some Japanese material to get a feel of how willing you are to do this before you go sinking time into classes.

Random anon here. Just want to say I'm learning Japanese myself, and it's a lot of work, but totally worth it. Just finishing up my second semester and I'm definitely going for a third. I'm actually starting to think some things in Japanese which is pretty cool.

Well my first degree was in Literature, which I then did an MA in. I just don't like where that can take me now. I have a literary background, and I know a few bits and pieces of Japanese from picking it up over the years, so I figure I'm actually a good choice for this kind of thing.

It's quite nice actually. I'm able to listen and understand a lot of Japanese conversation at this point.

As to you OP, I say if it's a goal you really want to go for, go for it. As for me, it's going to be awesome when I'm able to read a Japanese game IN Japanese.

Does anyone have any experiences of this kind of thing? I figure there must be some anons in /jp/ getting formal qualifications in Moonspeak.
