Air was the worst key work by far. The only redeeming factor is the music.

Because air was the first kyoani adaptation. I don't think they expected it to be as popular as it was. I remember some of the cast of kanon made appearances in air. After that kyoani announced that they were remaking kanon and with all the hype around it the budget was much nicer.

And in Kanon 06 there were nanase appearances but no One remake ;__;

AIR is actually my favorite (outside of CLANNAD perhaps, since I actually played most of that). Maybe the story was too convoluted for it's own good, but I liked the setting and smaller cast. It really allowed for development to be focused on each of the individual characters.

I didn't mind the lack of happy ending, and I think I understood the story.
The problem is, well, it's just not any good. The ending felt really out of place for me, it wasn't sad, it was just "wait, that's it?" kinda feeling. It always weirded me out when people claimed it to be a tearjerker.

Story of Air for dummies:

1000 years ago in Japan during the Heian-Period, the Emperor wants to root out all old religions and nature-idols, like those silly winged beings, and unite the land under the buddhist religion.
Shit succeeded and all winged beings are either killed or enslaved and used as living weapons of war, since they had hax power. One of the winged being was Kanna bi no Mikoto, that blue-haired tsundere bitch from the past, who was held by the emperor as somthing lika a 'mascot', and dearly wanted to meet her mom, another winged being being held somewhere else, by fleeing her prison with the help of that Samurai-dude (who's Yukito's ancestor btw).

After traveling around Nip-land and finally meeting her mom, drama happened and her mother was shot dead by dem evil pointy arrows of the emperor's soldiers who where send to pursue and kill all winged beings.
Before dying, she finished off the soldiers with her hax-powers, and entrusted Kanna with her 'memory of the stars' (since winged beings see themselves as some kind of aliens who brought life on earth or something) and of course, the 'taint' she received by the curses and hate of all the soldiers she killed during her life of being misused as a weapon of mass destruction.

This 'taint', was infact the first curse, that will make the lifes of any of Kanna's future reincarantions miserable by making them all social outcasts and giant retards (GAO), so that they cannot lead a happy life with friends and love and shit.

When she tried to flee the encirclement with the Samurai-dude and that female servant, she also got shot by dem evil arrows and received her second curse, this time a buddhist curse, ordered by the emperor, that instantly kills her and doesent allow her to be reborn as winged being, or to return to the circle of nature, but to be reborn into normal humans.

Of course the essence of a demi-god like winged being is far to great for a mere human, so that her essense is to be reborn into several humans at once.
But all those humans have something in common: They still bear the first curse in them that denies them to make friends, and the second curse results in their early death - since the essense of a demi-god will definitely break apart such a small vessel of a ordinary human.

The Samurai-dude and the female servant, who managed to flee, where thinking of a way to break the two curses - and they found one: Fucking.

srsly. they know that they couldnt really help Kanna in their lifetimes, but they hope that someone in future generations can find a way to help her. So they just gave up and fuck. to produce children who will carry on their will for the far future.

so, after the '1000th summer', in year 2005, the MC of Air, Yukito, who is an ignorant descendence of the Samurai-dude, leads a life of a hobo and travels around nip-land for the search for some ominous 'winged girl' his mother always talked about (and always sought for in her lifetime).

He finds a retard (in fact, several retards) and after some DRAMA and MAGIC, he finds out that Mizusu is the biggest retard of all three - which means, she possesses the most of Kanna's essense and with this, also the MAGICAL AIDS aka Kanna's curses.

He strives to find a concrete way to break her curses, but failed hard. In the process of failing hard, he realizes that he himself being a neckbeard, retard and loli-hater is the main cause of his failings.
So he used some moar MAGIC (gained by taking on the will of his ancestors from thousand or so years ago) to turn himself into a fucking crow and to return back in time to correct his mistakes.
being a crow, he lives through the same couple of days he spend with Mizusu again, and somewhere managed to 'bring her the happiness she never had'.

After Mizusu died (because the second curse still is active), her soul took her happy memories into the sky, and to the sleeping soul of Kanna.
This, in fact, was the first happy memory ever experienced by any of Kanna's fucked-up reincarnates, so the curse that makes them to be born retards and social outcasts was lifted.

Hence, we see the two kids (both of them reincarnates of Kanna's essence) holding hands (ie. being able to make friends and stop being retards for once) in the last scene.

The bittersweet thing here is just; the second curse by the buddhist monks still remains. the new reincarnates of Kanna now can make friends and lead a happy life, but it will remain a fairly short one.

And with the retard Yukito being turned into a fucking crow, he wont be able to have human descendands who will carry on HIS will to break the second curse.
And beside him, nobody in the world knows about Kanna or the curse.

So, Kanna's reincarnates will be fucked up for all eternity - only being able to life a short life, but arguably, with the grace of living a happy one.
