Actually, yes. Stuff like Kira Kira sells in Japan for 9,240 yen (about 108 dollars). The reason Higurashi and Umineko are so cheap is that Ryukishi doesn't actually have to pay anything for the production, aside from his own living, as opposed to other companies that have to pay writer, artists, musicians, programmers and voice actors.
Similary, MangaGamer has to pay licensing fees to the musicians(Ryukishi didn't have to pay anything for those, the artists basically donated the music), and pay for translation, editing and coding.

Higurashi Kai is a huge game, more than 3MB of text complete, Question arcs are about 2MB.

He's wrong.

That simple. People were under the IMPRESSION at the time that no Kai music would be changed, and AoS even admitted he didn't really check the Kai tracks.

Someone on another message board, however, about a week later noticed that several tracks were missing and/or changed. For instance, during Shion's escape from the school in the first chapter, there is a completely different, Kai-only track playing there in the original.

Several of the artists that are missing from Meakashi do some very pivotal tracks in Tsumihoroboshi and Minagoroshi, and if they're missing, this is more than a small thing.

Thanks for this. All of these, except for Depressive Paranoia, it looks like, are in the Higurashi Kai VN OST, in addition to the (obviously) Japanese version's music/sound files.

Anonymous from Spain just seems to have replaced some tracks (especially the SE), with others. I doubt I'll be able to do a full patch (just as he wasn't able to), given this, but I'll try my best. I'll probably just use the replaced sound effects that Anonymous from Spain used in his patch, so it's possible I could end up missing something SE-wise.

Right now I'm going to go through the Japanese version of Tsumihoroboshi to find the missing tracks and to match those up with the English version.

For those waiting for a clean proper single executable crack, here it is:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/9fk5tt - higurashi_kai_tsumihoroboshi.exe

Starting with Higurashi Kai, they started using some integirty checks, and I believe the arc's are checked too, but the check should be trivial to disable with a few patches if it is present. The executable integrity checks were bypassed using a code injection.

Here are some older cracks that some people missed:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/frb0f4 - soullink.exe - While the Higurashi exe is known to work fine with this game, there's no harm in making a proper crack for it too.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/okeqw0 - edelweiss_v2.exe - The second fixed Edelweiss release, with a proper crack (without hybrid scripts and old exe). This is probably useless now as they plan on releasing a third version with redone translation.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/nycxhi - higurashi_kai_meakashi.exe - In case anyone missed it.

All these cracks don't require changing any archives or adding additional scripts and you can delete BGI.exe as it won't be needed.

>> No.4908223

This would maybe work for adding the music that wasn't included in MangaGamer's release, but it would require a degree of hacking and editing to get it to work. Cudder or the guy that does the sprite patch would probably be able to confirm this.

Create a new data05000.arc (where the .ogg music files are stored) with the missing Tsumihoroboshi music. Then, override the code that pulls up the tracks (not sure where this would be located, but it's probably in the script, which I think is in data01000.arc) to replace/add the new tracks. Sound effects probably wouldn't be able to be done this way, since it seems like they removed a fair bit of them and didn't use a replacement file.

>> No.4908326

>>4908184
When we combine all the Higurashi arcs together, which is planned for after the last of the answer ones gets released, we'll definitely need to edit the scripts to remove the versionchecks. But keep unpacking, I'm too old for that stuff now.

>>4908223
Putting the new sound files back into the .arc is not necessary. The engine looks for the file in the current directory, then the appropriate .arc (this is how Kaibrid/2 works). Inserting new sounds, modifying old ones, etc. are trivial since we practically know how to disassemble/edit/reassemble scripts. That was the whole premise on which Editorashi was based (speaking of which, SP1 will probably not be released until later, once the whole series is done.)

>> No.4908389

>>4908326
Ah, all right. Then it would just be a matter of editing the script to add the missing music. I'm thinking about doing it for Tsumihoroboshi so we can get a proper music patch, but I'm not exactly sure where it's located/how to properly edit and reassemble it.

Well it's already been extract since there was the edit for it. But I can't remember the reason why no one wanted to backport it onto ONscripter. That way, someone with a little bit of Japanese knowledge could manually insert the voices using that one niconico video as an example.

Guy doing the music replacement here.

Cudder made a program for extracting the script in a manageable format, right? I.E. the way the question arcs are formatted on the Editorashi site. I've been searching through the archive for it, but I can't find anything about it. If someone wants to upload the Tsumihoroboshi script in the Editorashi-type format, or whatever, I'd gladly go through it and edit the music it's supposed to pull up so it'd be the same as the Japanese version.

But, as I said earlier, this wouldn't work for the sound effects.

I might have thought that it would've been easier to do than it looked based on the Editorashi site. I saw the music filenames in the script over on Editorashi (they show up as "msysXX"), so I thought it would be as easy as just changing the script to reflect the correct bgi filename. An example from Tsumihoroboshi would be switching "b10_giwaku2" with "Depressive Paranoia" or "Sheep Counts" at the appropriate part in the script. That would be after converting them to ogg and then bgi files, of course.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Tsumihoroboshi partial music patch. A couple things to note:
- Only four tracks have been added/replaced since the Meakashi patch.
- This is NOT a complete patch, unfortunately, but should be enough to enjoy the game with some of the superior replaced tracks.
- This hasn't been tested.

The tracks that have been added since the Meakashi patch are as follows:
b10_giwaku2 - depressive paranoia
b_dive - PROS
Cradle song - Bellflower
Feel - HGRS_03

It's because they added checksums for the archives themselves from within the script. It's less of a matter of the exe and more of a matter of the initial _bp script checking the archive. In this case, in system.arc, you have ipl._bp, which checks the hashes of the data archives (hashing function is at 401000, trace from there). If someone is willing to make a disassembler/reassembler, this problem could be overcome. It can also be overcome by manually patching in the hashes, but that's probably too much of a pain for most people.
(Function at 0045B6D0 in the new exe is the one doing the hashing). With a few clever hardware breakpoints, it's possible to find the location of the hashes, but I think a _bp disassembler/reassembler would solve these problems once and for all.

Well, I'm not a hacker myself (not even a programmer), but you can't just remove the function output of which (hash) you're supposed to use for comparison with the hash you already have. I'd go after the comparison routine and made it follow the same route it does when hashes match when they don't match. We'll lose data files' error checking though.

You need to make a modified exe which bypasses the data01000.arc integrity check. It's not terribly hard to make one.

Look at 045B6D0, that's the VM instruction handler which hashes a given archive number (0-1,...). Set a breakpoint on it and see how it works. 0401060 is the function that does the hash (401000 is the effective hashing function).

You would have to modify the code at 45B6D0 to first check what the parameter is, if it's 1, just give it the expected hash, otherwise just run the original function. Plain old hooking via code injection. I bet you could do it if you tried.

I like the designs, but the way they animated them is retarded (the chibi look and overly retarded anime reactions and faces on EVERYTHING)

Since you want a CG patch so badly, let's examine what steps YOU need to take to make one:

1) Find the game with the new sprites/CGs
Is this it >>4908530 ? (*)
2) Find or make a tool to extract the sprites/CGs and convert them to BMP or PNG
3) Convert the sprites to the game's own internal format using some BGI tools (*)
4) Extract and convert the original sprites to PNG using some BGI tools (*)
5) Match up the original sprites to the new sprites and replace the original sprites accordingly
6) Pack up the sprites into an arc (optional) (*)
7a) Test the sprites in the Kaibrid2 backport.
7b) If needed, patch the new game exe to take the cg arc that you made in 7a, otherwise this works on both games.

* - Requirements for this are fullfilled and you can probably do it now.

Is there a show stopper? Tools for PS2 sprite extraction/conversion are lacking? Or just nobody cares about making one, if that's the case, then just don't ask for it, or if you want it, go make it!

I love the original sprites. Just need the music/SE patch and I'm good.

Do i have to start from scratch?
Why can't use the old patch as a start?

You can try and see if it helps, or get in contact with whoever did the first patch and have him do this one too.

No, it's only a partial music patch. It's impossible to completely fix the music without editing the actual script.

So will we be getting this sprite patch in the usual Sprite-only and Sprite+Background flavors? Or just one of the two?

Also, we're coming close to needing another thread, I believe. 300's the limit before auto-sage, right? Might end up having to start another before the patch is done.
