Meakashi's music was never completely fixed.

The person that did the BGM fix fixed the same ones that were missing in Higurashi arcs 1-4 that were reused in Meakashi, but someone realized about a week later that some Kai tracks, including some really good ones, were changed as well. We never got a patch for those ones.

Also, some of the artists that did some of the pivotal music in this arc and Minagoroshi (IIRC) were the artists that had music changed in Meakashi.

We're not doing it because you 'cracked it so easily'. We're releasing them separately because we thought you'd all rather have one every few months rather than waiting until they were all finished.

And we're not trying to 'scam' anyone with the price. There are licensing fees, translation fees, and many more costs going into this game than there was when it was released as a doujin game.

Think of it this way--Look at all the work going into Katawara Shoujo. Do you think they'll sell that for a very high price in English, if any price at all? Now imagine all the costs that would go into a Japanese company trying to license it, translate it and release it in Japan. Heck, the Japanese side would probably also have to pay the original creator who came up with the idea a royalty fee as well, even though he never did any work on the game.

You need to gain their trust again by presenting proper translations/content, not by preaching to them on what's right.

1) As for DearDrops, I see no reason we won't be translating it. We have a pretty close relation to Overdrive. I don't think a simultaneous release will happen though. It's something I'd love to do personally, but I doubt we will. I know right now I'm bogged down on trying to fix Koihime and a couple of our other projects.

These answers are off-record.

2) Kind of. I'm not entirely sure who the others have been negotiating with since right now I'm working on weeding out the people who caused us to have bad translations in the first place--I mean, working on my own projects.

3) Not as well as I'd like since we aren't selling enough.

Don't know if you can answer this, but how did KiraKira all ages sell compared to the 18+ version during the sale week? There was quite a difference in price for just the adult content, and I was wondering if people were paying the extra 10 euros for the 18+ version during the sale.

Honestly, I realize some of the games that slipped out managed to have a lot of problems. And no, I probably wouldn't buy those either. I'd just rather you didn't pirate them so you could use the time that would be spent playing said pirated copy on say, playing one of our other games that did have the quality you were willing to pay for.

I don't think it's unreasonable for someone in the business to ask that you either pay for the game or don't acquire it at all.

>>4890793
Maybe I could, maybe I couldn't. I don't think it's worth trying to do though, so I'd never bother trying to make 4chan rage. I'd much rather come to terms and convince people in a respectable manner, than purposefully try to incite their anger.

I'm not some little kid who feels the need to trash talk on X-box live, lol.

I'd like to think I've managed to yank our image out of the toilet.

Since I've started working with them and pushing for the increase in quality that needed to be made, I feel like our products have managed to improve. It's just hard to catch all the ones that were in the pipelines to begin with before I started working there.

I know our Editor working on the Higurashi series has been putting a lot more effort in, which is part of why that hasn't been released one-per-month like the boss had originally hoped to do. On that note, Tsumihoroboshi was actually translated by a different person than the group who did the question arcs and some of our other games. Admittedly, I only glanced at the scripts, but I felt she did a much better job than the Higurashi scripts I'd seen you guys posting.

I'm finally starting to get an idea of which of our translators were and weren't doing what needed to be done, so I expect there will be difference once I'm done what I'm dealing with now.

Unfortunately, no, our sales don't seem to have reflected this at all. Soul Link's sales figures are still sitting down there with the sex romps despite the effort put into it and the commotion that surrounded it.

Contrarily, Shuffle, one I had nothing to do with, is still our best seller, with nearly twice as many as the others despite the sale. Though, I admittedly haven't seen the sales figures for the bundles and my latest two games yet.

I'm hoping the re-translation of Edelweiss will demonstrate the effect of a quality boost to the boss.

We also have a new editor who will be trying to touch up the sex romps that are translated, but not released yet.

So yeah, there are actually a lot of internal changes being made to try and improve the games for everyone. That's part of why I've become more sensitive to the whole piracy issue myself. It sometimes feel like the efforts I'm making to try and make people want these games is just going to waste.

We're not going anywhere anytime soon, but it is rough, and I do wish the numbers reflected our efforts better.

Price is absurd. Really 19 euro for one episode of higurashi?
Reasons why I dont even consider buying it anymore
-price - questions arcs were overpriced, but anwer arcs are absurdly expensive. You absolutely have to cut the price someway.
-digital download only - if I want to buy something I like I want it to have in my collection, on shelf, next to my anime figurines etc. No digital download can satysfy the feeling of having the original box. I am more tempted to buy original japanese novels just to be able to have them on the shelf.
- cutted content - one example that forced me to use the music patch - first scene with Rena in first arc should have different music than the scene before - your release have the same BGM in both scenes. And when the scenes changes it suddenly stops playing the BGM and starts it immediately again. After that I used the BGM patch so I dont know if its only place where this happen and I wont ever try to find out.

I just hope the price isnt that high because of some security software that is absolutely pointless thanks to the pirates that can crack it up during few hours.

And last thing - look at how Higurashi looks. Its not very appealing. Only people who already knows what its about and why is it worth reading would consider buying it. Without demo, movie, or anything else people who dont know anything about it woudnt continue reading past the price.

There are a number of likely reasons for that.

Shuffle is very popular in the west thanks to a very popular anime. Soul Link, not so much, it's anime has barely been heard of, and those who have watched it aren't eager to play the game. Also Shuffle had a tons of publicity, and came out not too long after AX, and was a title people would get excited about. Not too many people have heard of Soul Link in comparison, and even if they had it's not a title they get excited about.

Truly different, but the pacing in Higurashi is really off, the first half of the chapter can drag a lot from chapter 2 onwards. It's really atmospheric and creepy, so it's really good in the horror/supernatural regard, don't even try to see it as a mystery.

Glad to hear

>Unfortunately, no, our sales don't seem to have reflected this at all. Soul Link's sales figures are still sitting down there with the sex romps despite the effort put into it and the commotion that surrounded it.

Soul Link has the issue that it is obscure in the English speaking market, and honestly it's not as good as KiraKira which has been becoming more popular as time has gone on thanks to word of mouth, Soul Link is "just another game" (no offense intended, as I know you liked it enough to have been working on a fan translation of it).

>Contrarily, Shuffle, one I had nothing to do with, is still our best seller, with nearly twice as many as the others despite the sale. Though, I admittedly haven't seen the sales figures for the bundles and my latest two games yet.

The Shuffle franchise is among the most popular in the western fan base based on a visual novel, probably only behind Key and Type Moon stuff. Also, despite the fact that you did not work on it, Shuffle probably had the best quality from MangaGamer besides Soul Link onward, there were a couple errors, but nothing serious, and seemed to be professionally done.

>I'm hoping the re-translation of Edelweiss will demonstrate the effect of a quality boost to the boss.

Don't expect a massive jump in Edelweiss sales when you finish retranslating it, it's a couple years old and the new translation, while it will surely get some people to try it out especially those who enjoyed KiraKira (and the upcoming fandisc). This isn't to say that it's worthless, as it gives a great image especially to those who judge MangaGamer based on Edelweiss, however while it will lead to a boast of sales it is unlikely to cause tons of sales.

Piracy is a tough issue and while one can try to minimize it, it is impossible to eliminate it. The fact that you guys do not offer physical copies, and instead offer something that is the exact same as what the pirates get (plus DRM), does not do any favors towards limiting piracy. I do by the titles from MangaGamer that I enjoy, however many people won't.

>We're not going anywhere anytime soon, but it is rough, and I do wish the numbers reflected our efforts better.

If you guys had kept up the Edelweiss level translations, you would have been out of business within a year. While it may be true that one doesn't see a 1:1 correlation between effort and sales, the quality builds up a brand name. If you release shit, people will buy once and not buy again in the future. However this is not something that will be noticed any single release.

Thank you for taking the time to post here, it has been awesome getting your thoughts on stuff.

I own a physical copy of every Steam game I have. Bonus digital content like HL2:LC and Peggle Extreme are the obvious exceptions, but everything else... Anyway, point is that I have never bought any digital content from Steam, despite having 15 games registered to it. There will always be a large group of people who prefer having physical copies of things and will pirate whatever isn't available in that format.

P.S. Price point aside, I would have considered buying Higurashi if it had physical copies. As things stand, I'd rather show my support for the series by importing the cheaper JP copies and waiting for the inevitable script patches.

Since there are MangaGamer devs in here, just one quick thing about packages.

While there is good reason to package old games (especially Shuffle), the first trial likely should be with some big new title (for example, if you guys get that company whose bread and jam you wouldn't want to eat). For the same reason that a new translation of Edelweiss won't cause a huge amount of sales. Shuffle has been out for more than half a year, and while it would likely sell nice with the offer of a box, people aren't going to get excited for it compared to something new because it has been out for quite some time. Something new on the other hand, a box will help convince people who see this new product to buy it instead of passing over it and never thinking about it again.

Thank Kouryuu for hijacking this thread to make "meet the devs" out of it. It takes balls to prove that you're chaotic evil and upload the game being fully aware that you make certain someone's 8 little kids to die of starvation by doing this and, unfortunately, /jp/ these days has only hearts. Yay, I guess..?

...I bet he's giggling somewhere nearby as he walks to ask his boss for promotion because of his anti-piracy achievements.

You mean Cuddler. He does a piggyback method off the very first crack to 'crack' it. I was just hoping we would get something not so messy. Hence, a real crack.
Anonymous from Spain does the music patch and from the Meakashi the music wasn't altered iirc so I would assume the same for this.
Then Gogeta(or he might just do it under Anonymous like the first one) does the sprite patch, which I don't really care for.

What exactly is missing? The meakashi music patch was altered 3 times for some of the missing tracks. I've played it and it seems find to me.The read me said after V2 that it should be indistiguishable from the original so I don't get what the problem with the patch is.

Several tracks from Kai are missing in the music patch. They were replaced by other tracks, sometimes music from 1-4.

A couple of the tracks are really good ones, too, and the artists of those ones have some really pivotal music in Tsumihoroboshi and Minagoroshi, IIRC.
