If such a thing were to come into existence it would most likely be a computer-controlled set of waves or weak shocks administered directly to your brain to control your perceptions. It could be used to turn people into slaves, so it would have far-reaching consequences.

But sure, let's say it's a drug.

It would be insanely addictive, simply because it would be so pleasurable as to make your life awful in comparison. It would cause tremendous damage and thus be highly illegal, although a weaker version might be used for pain relief purposes in hospitals.

The biggest question is how much this would impact your life: is it a drug that simply pastes your waifu's image onto reality without any kind of disruptive effect, or does it put you in a dream-like state? If it's the latter, neets would go extinct in a matter of weeks as they'd stop going outside, sleeping and even eating. If it's otherwise harmless, it would still be banned because women would complain about it. Until a husbando version would be invented. In which case women would still complain about it, get it banned, and demand real men provide for them while they're drugging themselves up with their own (legal) version.

I remember sitting infront of the computer and I kept seeing Darth Vader's face on the desk and some guy in a fetal position next to my computer chair. For whatever reason I decided to go to the park, and I spent so much time trying to get my shoes on so I could walk there. I'd keep thinking I was riding in a school bus, or that it was 1 PM and a good idea to take a leisurely drive.
