After about two weeks of incoherent babbling, yelling, and eating caelium cookies, her attitude changed. I had to turn her back into a jewel for most of the citizenship test but later released her as proof that I had a “com’pran’ion”. She learned human speech very quickly and began asking me questions and complaining. This time I had tried to explain to her my job. She would ask me why I was fighting kobras. I would be fighting bigger kobras and she would ask me why they were different from the previous kobras. I would be fighting the kobra boss and she would ask how I was able to tell how he was the boss. I could only reply that he was the biggest one of them. Hence the pouting about such lame assignments, I agreed and promised her a vacation.

I always wanted a child but this was a little unexpected. This change did have its benefits. She said that since she could transform back into a smaller fairy to save on food costs but her magical ability had grown. Now she had more useful spells and was able to cast them at a more reliable rate. She also became very interested in reading and the torrent of questions from her never stopped. By now I had gotten use to it and answered her, sometimes difficult, questions.

It is apparently more common than not to marry one’s companion in this country. It started off with one of her usual questions but this time it was about men. I later found out that her more recent reading subjects were about relationships and similar activities. Even though we were just wandering the city like normal, I felt awkward. The idea that I was essentially dating a girl I had raised like a daughter just didn’t feel right. The smile on her face as we held hands throughout the entire day made me smile as well. One thing led to another and on her tenth birthday, we were married.

This very unfunny joke was not met with any laughter on my part. She had a way of telling many jokes that lacked humor but this one was by far the least amusing.

She looked away and we sat there in silence.

At night, I would hold her until she fell asleep. Then I would run out to the warp and speak with the Lord Marshal’s doctors. I read books but none helped. I now realized why she had spent so much time reading books and asking questions. She already knew her fate and tried to find a way out.
On the third night, I pleaded to the sun to not rise. If dawn were to never come, I would have that much longer to be with my beloved.
I entered the room and greeted her with my usual smile. She had become frail and bedridden in such a small amount of time. She held onto her ragged koala bear and attempted to greet me with a kiss.
It was too sudden. I couldn’t think of anything more. So I just lay next to her and cried.
“Our adventure together seemed so short but thank you for being with me. I-I… I love y--…”
