not a pleasant shoot, took me several weeks to find a tree remotely close to what I wanted (most around here are kept trimmed well off the ground)
then the day I had time was too hot but also too windy, and I basically had to climb into the tree anyways to pose them

Im not at the one anon’s 2nd faceup level but this is my third faceup. I went with a really simple design to work on line work and brush control which is marginally better than my first two.
I tried some lines on the cheeks for the blush but they look like scratches, maybe the red was too deep? I know overall it is asymmetrical that gets worse the longer you look, the right being the better half. Also tried some purple pastel over the black/upper eye but that didnt really work out. Eyebrows and mouth are still my sloppy parts. Mightve laid on the blush a little much. I’m getting better at erasing stuff at least.
Any feedback or tips on my problem areas would be appreciated.

I would get autistic about the resin not matching so this is a problem. All I know is they're both "V white" according to Chinese users, and I assume the V stands for "Volks". They both seem to be a stark white but not entirely paper white, just a little bit warm but no real yellow or pink hue.

Resin goes through too many curing processes to have a finished color guaranteeing being that color. You get batches with colors slightly off constantly, resin is fickle. Also, Pantone costs $$$ which would increase overhead in an already expensive hobby.

I'm not familiar with resin production admittedly, but if they already have that many whites as anon was mentioning then couldn't they just bin each to match? It's not as though they aren't matching to some sort of color target anyway, it's likely just some sort of in house sample.
In either case, I get how picky color swatch matching can be, but in the end I mostly meant something like >>46636055 alluded to. It doesn't have to be perfect so long as is it gives you some sort of frame of reference because I've seen things like >>46635744 and the color was absolutely nowhere near how it's like in person.
Swatches don't need to cost a small fortune if you're only buying for skin tones either, I suppose it still is enough to where it could drive costs up but personally I would gladly pay that price for peace of mind.

>> No.46638143

>>46638083
>It's not as though they aren't matching to some sort of color target anyway, it's likely just some sort of in house sample.
It's easy to do with in in house sample, because you're always using the same materials. Different companies use different pigments and different resins, so even if you used the same ratios you might get wildly different results. Effectively everyone would have to agree on a standard(good luck) and then go out of their way to match that standard(fat chance), and whenever anyone changed their resin or pigment they'd have to go about rematching to the standard - and even then, the different resin will likely age differently, meaning that over time differences will become apparent anyways. Unless everyone is using the same materials - which isn't going to happen, as many companies probably keep their house resin blend a secret - it's really unlikely to be worth pursuing for anyone. Add on top of that that if your resin doesn't match, customers on theoretically more likely to buy extra hands/heads/whatever from you rather than someone else, companies aren't exactly incentivized to match precisely.

>> No.46638539

>>46638143
These are all things that other industries face and they still fit in accurate reference based color matching, when I'm only suggesting at least _some_ sort of reference point (even if it's loose in either direction). Proprietary blends are a thing everywhere and accurately portraying your final product doesn't magically reveal manufacturing processes.
Fear of resin not matching is all the more reason to be for this. You're paying how much for looks? So why should skin tone be a gamble, and even worse why should matching replacement parts be a gamble to your existing purchase when you're looking for the same marketed color variant? It doesn't matter what the manufacturing process is when binning exists. Binning is likely the reason why there's so many shades of white to begin with.
Let me be clear, I'm not begging for perfection. I'm not necessarily talking about interchangability between brands. I'm not asking them to craft new skin shades around reference points (rather they would match reference points to their existing tones to better inform the buyers). I'm asking to have some sort of an idea of what I'm spending $1000+ USD on.
In the event that companies commonly have that many whites, then providing a common reference point would only increase the likelihood that customers end up with a matching result between different brands. Instead of having to guess or rely on hearsay and chance, which would leave a wider window for failure.
Brands don't have to agree on the same standard reference system because the interoperability of different reference systems work well enough.
Seeing what reference color matches each skin tone would cost a negligible amount of money ($300 USD for a white swatch in the correct coating and an hour of labor). The reasons why companies could potentially lose out on X amount of money is unimportant to me, the buyer, in this matter. Especially when it's merely a suggestion in a forum where opinions have absolutely no impact on the industry to begin with.

This industry isn't big enough, rich enough, or organized enough to handle this. The pigments are sometimes proprietary. It's often two people casting in small batches in their basement. There is no money for Pantone, which for small businesses can be expensive to align with pigments, if the company hasn't already done it. It's not just $300. I understand your point, it would be deeply helpful, but getting five+ countries to agree on a standard (France, USA, Japan, China, Korea), chemical companies, and more, would be an absolute nightmare. Every part of the resin has a color, or is clear. Every part of the process affects color. How much UV the resin is subjected to. Curing time. Pigment mixture. Mixture time. Outdoor humidity and temperature.
To make matters worse, resin hates pigment. This is what brings the 'marbled' effect out on highly pigmented dolls after a certain point, and casting processes to try to draw the pigment outwards (and also why they cannot be sanded from some companies) then makes this even harder. Pigment A1000 will not look like Pigment A1000, but Pigment A1005 by the time you are done. And the batches will vary a little bit because of the previous reasons.

>> No.46644359

To make it even worse, the batch color reactions are probably not even recorded after the reaction. How does chemical A and B react together? How much of A and B? Has anyone matched each of those colors to each batch? Sample tested? And we haven't even gotten into long-term UV unstable resins, like French resin, which changes color throughout its life. What color IS it?
Right now, due to how much resin technology has advanced, the hard work of a few doll autists, chemical and plastic science, we have some of the most UV resistant and stable resins ever. Its a great time to be a doll owner. Your doll is very unlikely to ever become the "beauty yellow" of some of the first BJD that were put out.

I'm the anon who originally posted about hybridization being so difficult. It's a bummer, but I understand that companies are legitimately small and they're not doing it on purpose or anything. Most of the time you can figure things out by asking them, and they can tell you if their body matches e.g. Volks SD, but if you match a niche company with another niche company you might be trying a combination that maybe only a handful of people have tried in the whole world so I perfectly understand. You cannot possibly demand that there will be a match. And they cannot possibly factor this in while trying to promote their own dolls either... That's hard enough on its own.
I guess it's just the downside of participating in such a niche hobby made of small companies.
And I feel pretty bad about asking them complicated questions and then changing my mind in the end. I definitely wish they didn't miss a sale out of this kind of stuff...
The only real complaint I have is... why you gotta only offer a single-jointed body... I know it's prettier when you don't see the slits but you can't sell me a $1000 doll that has less articulation than the $15 wooden art mannequin I got from Ikea...

https://www.dolldreaming.com/topic/20044-dollbot-review-with-mdd-comparison/

I've been reading a bit about DollBot, according to what I know it's a new company made by people who were involved in MDD modding and even ex-Volks designers?. The body seems good, biggest selling point is on the thighs which seems (at least to me) more appealing than the standard MDD & Mochi Asahi body. The neckpeg seems to have been designed to fit Dollfie Dream line heads as well. Hands can be compatible if you switch the entire hand + body joint.

What are your thoughts on them? know an anon ITT has one, lovely doll that got me interested. Just wondering about clothes and mostly if the skin color difference will be noticeable in a SW Volks head/hands + platinium skin combination (that's the white skin naming they use). Kinda have to think about clothes as well. I'm just looking around for now, but overall very interesting.

This is getting rather off-topiec but yes, it does. If a vendor ships to a different address than the one registered with the customers PayPal account or makes any other changes to the order after payment, PayPal will always side with the customer in case of a dispute.
During the corona years scams abusing this got so common that in the system we use at my workplace, orders paid with PayPal are now almost completely locked, the onyl changes we can make are setting a delivery date or cancelling the entire order while issueing a refund.

Excuse the wrinkled background. Here is a Volks semi-white head on the white Dollbot body. Also included a semi-white MDD peace sign hand onto the Dollbot wrist to compare to a regular Dollbot hand. Dollbot skin is slightly warmer (see thighs) however the color difference is minor, especially in person.

Originally I had issues with a loose leg on my Dollbot, but it was fixed after tightening the inner screws. One thing to note is that there is a small hole on the neck right underneath the chin. It's not visible at most angles and it's easy to edit out of photos. Also Dollbots are infamous for having silly looking knees when you bend them. You can push the leg back into the knee joint to fix this issue.

MDD outfits will fit Dollbots. Underwear can be an issue because Dollbots have wider hips. Tight underwear can get sucked into the hips which can be annoying when posing. Mine does not wear underwear for this reason.

I am a terrible liar so if I looked the deliveryman in the eye and said "this doll is not made of silicone and she's a gift to an actual human girlfriend I've got at home. How bad can a $15 CAD wig off amazon be? Surprisingly not total garbage, aside from the amount of shedding and trimming. Ladies and Gentle-anons, please welcome my Karin, now named Himari, to the doll family!

I'm super happy to have one of my grail dolls as my second dolls even if she is just a standard model. I don't have an outfit that fits the lore I have for her yet so she's stuck wearing her senpai's clothes for now. There are some other things I still need to get for her like a different wig and an eye mech. If anyone has recommendations for somewhere to get nice wigs or an eye mech other then the volks sponge, they'd be greatly appreciated.

Also took the of a new doll to try a new lens that is hopefully more suited to doll photography.

I only have a couple photos to share for right now. She's going to be appearing in a lot of photos this week, though.

Ah right. I always forget about those. They're helpful guides but I find the old guide to not be very comprehensive on vendors and the new guide to be unnavigable without Ctrl+f if you're looking for something specific. I don't know if there are supposed to be links that aren't working for me or if I'm just retarded in how I use the guides. Could be both?

>How are you thinking of styling her
I don't have a concrete image of the outfit(s) I want for her yet but something that says "tsundere student who's dad is wealthy but emotionally unavailable and trys to make up for it with money and overbearing mother who forces her to do modeling hoping it'll make her dad happy."
Probably something along the lines of a well kept uniform with more accessories than would be allowed and modern elegant fashion. Thigh length skirts, cute blouses, heals, purses and handbags, etc. As far as a wig, I'd like to change her hair color to a mid to dark brown. Long straight with bangs. Maybe with either curls, twin tails, or both.

>>46668610

Hell yeah! If you are who I think you are I'd love to hear more about your doll lore. Even if you're not that person, I still would.

I'll dump the lore for my dolls if people are interested. Not going to make a long winded post about the fictional head cannon I have for dolls that aren't relevant to anyone else otherwise.

>>46672652
>So cute when names rhyme.
Wasn't even intentional. I just think it's pretty and fits the theme of bright celestial bodies. Akari = Star, Himari = Sunlight

>DD and DDS aren't so different in height.
They are. There's about an inch and a half difference standing side by side. The torsos are the same length, though, presumably to save cost by reusing internal frame parts between dolls. The height difference comes mostly from the legs. Both dolls are kneeling in this photo, which is why they look the same height.

I'd post a photo of them standing together but unfortunately Akari went under for intensive stain treatment immediately after this photoshoot. It's amazing what you notice with fresh vinyl right next to a well loved doll.

> PLA+
If it's your first time printing / finishing a doll, I'd use a standard PLA, and stick with white. The PLA+ is a bit harder and usually has sort of shiny finish that you lose as soon as you start sanding it and subtly changes the color.
Easiest doll to finish is flat white or ivory colors. Print the face, hands and feet at high resolution (thin layer lines) to make them easier to sand. Rest of body can be printed at normal resolution and either sanded or left alone.
Wet sand face to 320 grit minimum with wet/dry sandpaper; face up and cover with MSC in layers. If you massively screw up face up, you can sand it all back down and restart.
You can paint an entire printed doll but it's a major undertaking; you use fill primer to coat, then sand, repeat until filled and smooth, then do color coat, 2 coats. From there you can do any finish coloring.
A 1/3 scale BJD requires most of a 1kg roll of material and a week to print the raw, unfinished parts, so start with a fresh roll.

Get a resin printer if you can. If you need to use FDM at least use ABS so you can do acetone smoothing.

>> No.46680201

>>46679874
Resin makes sense for smaller stuff, like 1/6th dolls or smaller, but comes with own set of issues as you get larger. The 1/6th dolls I've done as test prints, I'm never 100pct satisfied w. the result. For 1/3 scale I think FDM is the way to go.
Not convinced ABS is required and increases the hardware issues he's going to have. He's just getting started w/ 3D printing.

For parts durability you can do very well with siraya tenacious resin. You can mix some of the white tenacious resin in with skin colored ABS-like resin for very tough parts while still being detailed and smooth.

I'm mostly suggesting ABS for the purpose of acetone smoothing, but you can use something like Smooth-On to smooth PLA.

>Smooth-On
I'd be interested in something that made the 3D print dolls more substantial feeling, better hand, and easier to finish.
That said, I'm pretty sure best case process with current tools is:
> design in CAD / Blender
> Print in PLA; iterate design
> Finish PLA surface to smooth
> Make mold of PLA part
> Resin cast final
Unless you're making dolls to at least cottage industry scale (dozens of dolls at a time per design) it's not worth the investment to make just one.

I agree. If you plan on casting dolls in resin anyways you may as well use a resin printer or use a resin printing service anyways. PLA for a master copy when the detail is poor isn't worth it.

If you do nothing it'll just slowly degrade further. I had a similar situation with one of my girls, her glasses chipped the faceup on her cheeks. To repair I used a clean (new) kneaded eraser to dab the spot and a soft brush to make sure it was clear, then even layer of MSC over the whole face, reapplied pastel powder to match the missing makeup, then msc again. It's still noticeable if you zoom all the way in, but it's fine in pictures and it stopped further chipping around the spot. Pic related. That's before the repair.

Next month is Thy Geekdom Con in Philadelphia on the weekend of the 24th-26th (https://thygeekdomcon.com/).). For anyone that doesn't know about it, it's a growing anime and pop culture convention that also hosts a growing doll mini convention. A lot of doll people from the Philadelphia/New Jersey area attend, allegedly.

I plan to host another board meetup there if any anons are interested. Likely the Saturday of the convention again. Let me know if you're interested. Lemon takes nice photos and he's also a bit of a bitch in terms of how often he just complains about things. Mosquitoes, heat, people, wind; it's like the outside is completely out to get him. In this sense, he shows true spirit fighting the urge to stay home in air conditioning and instead ventures to take the dolls out to get memorable photos.
As for 'harassed': in this example, like yeah you're at a university full of angsty students doing something out of the norm. Of course there's a chance that one of them calls you out on it. He hasn't mentioned this any time else; usually it's just security guards politely asking him to fuck off.
Personally (smallish town US experience) I've never had anyone comment on me taking a doll photo in public. I get looks as people pass by to check out what I'm doing, but nobody has said anything positive or negative. And that's fine by me.

Hey anons, what is the cheapest brand if I just want to build a basic 30-40cm doll? I went through the Parabox site and even the smaller bases seem to convert to over $100 USD. Also read through the first guide in the OP but have not checked the other sites yet

I have an idea of mind for how I want them to ultimately look (preferably two different dolls) but just waiting until I find good cheap bases for them

Finished the Yukata I started last week. The fabric ended up a bit stiff after hemming and as a result doesn't flow as nicely as I hoped it would. Also today I learned I absolutely do not have the fine motor skills required to properly tie a doll sized obi.

Sorry anon-kun. I did find some nice cheapo models on Aliexpress but my main concern is finding clothes that will fit on them, but it does advertise that the wig is removable so that's nice. My other option for what it's for is to just get a cosmetology bust and throw a nice black wig or something on her and possibly spray paint the skin color if necessary

Save money
Just save the fucking money and eventually get a good doll from a nice brand you like which you can get clothes easier for.

I have a feeling you don't even know what you really want yet, and that's okay, so don't rush it and keep looking around.
Parabox is cheaper but their thing is offering bodies from all sizes that other brands don't do, so if you want 30-40cm there's still other options like Tinyfox or whatever, just look around. If you really have no cash then consider downsizing to 1/6 scale, you can get smaller dolls from Azone up to 18cm (Azone has a good chunk of clothes for their dolls) or just put together a smaller Parabox.

Looks good! The fabric choice is really nice. The pattern I'm using mentioned that tying an obi at that scale is going to lead to frustration and look worse than sewing on a bow that looks right and using a closure on the back. I'm going with cotton for a simple hotel yukata look.

It's also woefully short, as I found out. I'm debating going with the accent fabric I'm planning to use for the belt as an extension on the bottom, while unconventional, since the length came up so damn short. I may just remake it if I decide it's too far gone.

Good enough for now, but I'm going to do the obi later. This is just something to keep the main yukata in place. Surprisingly happy with how this extension looks as well, but I think I still made it about 1/2" too short when she's standing up.
I put in one hook to simulate the tie that you'll find on the inside of yukata to secure the inside front to the side seam before draping the other side over your front. That made it much more consistent to dress her in. On a side note this is definitely the nicest thing I've made, with properly overcast stitches and hems and the most consistent I've gotten my seams to look. It's nice to see progress happening.

when I replaced the sticky tack with the plaster putty to hold it in, I didn't bother replacing it between the eyes & backing hemispheres

over all do not recommend sticky tack for doll eyes if you ever expect them to be in an environment over like 65°F

Assuming they're not the type to respect your goddamn privacy and leave your mail alone, you have plenty of options:

-Peter 2:17
-I have hobbies and if you think that's weird that's a you problem
-Present for friend
-Present for coworker
-Gag gift for the aforementioned
-Do you have a partner? It's for them.
-Taxable charitable donation
-Ordering for a friend/coworker too stupid to know how to order things cheaply from Asia

Just don't overthink it too much. Honestly, the people who matter won't mind, and the people who mind don't matter -- even if it's your parents.
