From its surrealistic yet never random plot, to its still-trenchant commentary on the horrors of modernity and 2000s issues, like the alienation and isolation by the realities of religious cults, pop culture and the early internet culture from that period of time in Japan, it's a masterpiece. Sono pulls out all the stops and hits us with dark humor, genuine suspense, and a remarkably fleshed-out set of characters. I was a part of that period of time so this film hits me personally and hard and was also my first film of his, discovering it in the year 2006 when I was in middle school, so you can imagine my shock at the time when I first watched it.
