I thought I would post my situation here instead, as the redditors on the other community (mostly those from STEM who don't know what they're talking about) aren't helping, just criticizing and assuming.

Long story short, I want to study Japanese at University. However, my family don't seem to trust my decision making and have made assumptions that the degree is worthless. I've been self-studying the Japanese language since 14 (I'm 19 now) and it was always a dream to study the subject at Uni. Now I'm just a inch away from pursuing that dream after being offered a place on Sheffield University's Japanese Studies undergrad program. What's stopping me is those who say I shouldn't study it, and I'm getting really upset over this whole ordeal.

I've been hearing mixed views:

People saying go for it and do what I want with my life.

The other half saying I'm going to "end up working in McDonald's with such a delusional dream" or "can't wait to see you 5 years later, back on Reddit complaining".

As people of the Japanese language community, what is your take on this? It's a very touchy subject for me as I might lose my families trust over this, but I'm willing to sacrifice anything to finally do something I want. Is there anyone with a similar experience / degree, where are you now? What is your job? Were you successful? I know as hell I need to work hard to study the language but I do love a good challenge!

P.S I'm currently on a gap year saving up to fund my own studies. My family isn't helping, I just wanted their simple support / validation. I've worked hard for this dream independently for 5+ years.

I have a vague plan of where I want to go with the degree, but I want to speak with professionals at the University to come up with a detailed career plan, and also just see what interests me most on the course. I might even do a master's if I have enough money by the end, to truly specialize in a specific field. Why am I so pressured to know exactly what my future should entail, when all I want to do is study something I love?

literature major, and it was such a fucking waste of 4 years off my goddamn life. going to uni for 'passion' is an utter meme, i fell for it and i hope you don't. it's so easy to get enticed by the idea of "professional" education, a school that exists for the sake of acquiring a wealth of knowledge for something you're actually interested in. but it's still the same shitty education system you had in highschool. it's still the same shitty day-to-day schedule of going to class for what you need to pass a fucking test, and then move onto the next test.
if you want to actually learn anything, it's all on you to do so after class... so just the same shit you could be doing at home.

knowledge itself shouldn't be gatekept behind paywalls anymore. university in the sense of a study method is outdated. information is no longer limited to expensive paper a select few have the luxury of owning. just about every subject you can learn college level for free at home; in regards to japanese language learning, DJT hinges on this concept.
university isn't to go and learn something you want to learn, it's to get a badge that says you've learned something. so you should strive to get a badge that actually has some use.
the only benefit i can think of with uni, is you are surrounded by other great people. from learners with the same interest, to the knowledgeable professionals, it can be nice. the thing is, you have to actually be the type of person to capitalize on that by having strong social life in college. otherwise, you can still experience that anywhere else in life, they're just not all put together all in one place so conveniently like uni.
and seriously, i think you already know about all the people who take japanese in uni and still can't compete with the neets who self studied their way to ACTUAL fluency.
