Remilia was the horror of the night: the vampire. But over time people forgot the fear of dark and she lost her purpose in life. However, in 1888, Jack the Ripper (Sakuya) appeared and brought back the fear of the night. At this point Remilia met Sakuya and made her a servant, then they traveled to Gensokyo.

I never bought into the "failed vampire hunter" story. A lot of the other myths just feel like red herrings to obscure the true background of Sakuya, that Zun eludes to here and there. Perhaps Sakuya didn't start outright hating other humans until they started ostracizing her for being 'different', it's also possible
she didn't allow herself to turn "cold" towards humans until 'certain events' forced her to do so ( attempting to kill her or killing off her family). I think her bad ending in IN, her conversation with Eiki and the names of some of her spellcards heavily suggest the kind of person she may have been before
working for the vampires. So the idea of her hunting vampires on behalf of humans just seems rather contradictory given those suggestions. My own headcanon is that she may have actually sought out the Scarlets herself, after having reached her limit with humans or being on the run with no other recourse,
learning of the ability to "manipulate destiny". Hoping to bypass whatever horrible fate was in store for her or even thinking she could become a different person entirely and erase her current identity, hence being given her current name. Also noting something interesting from Mei Ling's Soku ending, Sakuya
mentioned how "lucky" Mei Ling was to be able to dream, hinting that Sakuya may not be able to for some reason. Possibly due to her powers? But could even be due to some psychological trauma or a self suggestion, forcing herself not recall her past life in her memories as she's now living a 'new' life.
One other thing I found interesting, regarding the ideas of her being from another world according to Perfect Memento, in PCC when Yukari mentions the "That the borders between the pure land and hell are fading. This place has become a lawless land of oni." Sakuya replies "Hell is not as scary as Makai.
Oni, compared to the devil, are nothing at all." Just exactly how would Sakuya know anything about Makai? Was she a human born in Makai (parallels with Yumeko)? Was Remilia originally based in Makai and that's where Sakuya was either brought to or had traveled to find her, before moving to Gensokyo?
And one more theory, that despite her contract to Remi, perhaps Sakuya never returned after her bad ending in IN, allowing her to return to her past self, never again able to lead a normal life. Additionally could've been "all in the cards" as per Remi's ability, setting Sakuya free in a new world.

Sakuya rejecting humans to such an extent she flees them or past experiences with them to devote herself to a mistress and by extension her sister of a species that preys on humans for food. Either Sakuya went through some real shit or that's a deep grimsokyo story even darker than Alice and the eight men who never returned from the forest. The misanthrope who dedicated her life to serving vampires.

I like the idea that everyone in her household was once someone who came looking for her with the intent of killing her. Like Patchouli was once a magician who sought to rid an area of its vampiric menace and Meiling was a martial artist who sought to test her skills against the unholy strength of a vampire. They were all beaten but won over by Remilia's mercy, generosity, and charm. She offered Patchouli a library of esoteric knowledge the likes of which she had never seen and Meiling more tests of strength as a guardian, since there was no shortage of people seeking her out with malicious intent in the past.

Sakuya was just the latest addition to their household as one of the last active vampire hunters in an age that had moved on past superstitions. Maybe she managed to convince Sakuya of her desire to simply live undisturbed and offered her a place in her household. There was no longer a place in the world for people like Sakuya and she must be aware of that somewhere in the back of her mind. Once upon a time a vampire hunter may have been a respected role but that time was a very long time ago. Surely Sakuya knew what it felt like to have a world scoff at her and dismiss her as a nutjob for chasing some mythical being that only she seemed to believe in. Someone as long lived as Remilia is probably aware of the futility of trying to fight against the changing times and it could be that she convinced Sakuya of that. There was no place left in the world for a vampire hunter and killing Remilia wasn't going to change anyone's mind.

But maybe Sakuya should predate Meiling. Unless she is a particularly well traveled Chinese person or we buy into the meme that she's Scottish sinoboo, it wouldn't make sense geographically for her to have joined up before Sakuya. The real lore is probably incredibly simple anyways. I'll bet ZUN would say that Remilia straight up recruited her through a help wanted ad in the local paper or something.

Patchouli stands out as the one who's different of the entire SDM household beyond the two sisters. While Sakuya and Meiling are clearly servants of Remilia, Patchouli seems more like an equal or at least they mutually treat each as if they're on the same social standing. Whether this is out of respect or them having the same same social status in the Outside World (perhaps both are of noble birth). But their relationship is mutually beneficial which might also be why they'd treat each other more like equals. Despite having an enormous library, Remilia doesn't actually spend much time there in any canon or semi-canon sources. On the other hand Patchouli most of the time seems to be the one doing the heavy lifting or enabling whatever new scheme or outlandish idea Remilia just came up with because she's bored and time rich. A bored but incredibly wealthy and powerful figure and their right hand of infinite talents and abilities to make whatever they want happen is a tale as old as time and considering Patchouli's both magical abilities and extensive knowledge it's not hard to see how they've formed such a lasting partnership.

Vampire hunting as a celebrated tradition and even historic role is pretty common in traditional folklore and practices in the Balkans and Eastern Europe. Considering Zun has repeatedly suggested the Scarlet sisters are from Europe it would seem fairly likely if either Remilia either adopted or abducted Sakuya her origins and real name is probably something likely from that region.

Meiling is probably the most recent addition to the SDM household. She might even be native to Gensokyo despite her Chinese identify and supposed origin. Sinoboo she probably isn't cause although extremely rare there are some ethnic Han redheads that carry that gene and occasionally are born with red hair, or she is still Chinese but from the far west or borderline Central Asian countries, nomadic tribes and ethnic groups where red hair is more prevalent.

Patchouli is more like a live in friend who does favors in exchange for room and board. Question is, did create the library herself or did Remilia always have one and she is simply letting Patchouli use it because she would get more use out of it anyways. Might even be a bit of both and the library wasn't nearly as expansive as it is now before Patchouli began adding to it herself.

I see the library and by extension Patchouli being a lot like an in-house R&D department for Remilia's schemes and ambitions that Patchouli can usually make happen thanks to both her presence and the library's usefulness. The library probably existed in a much smaller form as is fairly standard anyway for stately home built in a certain age to have a library of some size so it's likely the SDM had one before Patchouli arrived. That said I doubt Remilia really has the attention span or interest to use it much herself so it's more like her giving Patchouli a blank cheque to keep on expanding to it as long as it can be useful for Remilia's ambitions when needed. I suppose it's a lot like historical royals or aristocrats patronising artists, philosophers, scientists or engineers and having them resident in their court/household as long as overall they're useful to their patron they're somewhat free to pursue their own pet projects alongside fulfilling their patron's desires. Remilia and Patchouli's relationship seems a lot like that although there's probably also some close personal friendship there as well considering they address each other on familiar terms rather than like a mistress/servant.

I wouldn't count her out. Even Dracula himself was known to be a sorcerer and Remilia does make use of magic herself. I'm sure she's made use of her collection in the past and has just exhausted its resources since she hasn't added to it since coming into it. That said, she's probably not an all rounded looking to master every form of magic and only looked into things that she was particularly interested in.

Patchouli is well read in the supernatural and magic to be aware of a powerful young vampire and seek her out so it's possible. Maybe I wouldn't count Remilia out in future but now she is still for a vampire at least young and not fully matured. It's more than likely given more centuries to mature she could start to pay more attention to magic and start fully utilising her library to the same extent as Patchouli.

It's a shame it's unlikely ever to come out as a full canon print work or manga but would be nice to see a spinoff fill in backstory or explore the history of the characters that have been introduced over the series originally from the outside world and chronicle some of their lives and origins before arriving in Gensokyo.

Meiling. No contest. Sakuya might be surprisingly strong for a fit, yet fairly slender woman, but Meiling has zero physical weaknesses, is a legendary master of martial arts and has mega-youkai strength to put behind it.

According to Perfect Memento she's referred to as a "master martial artist" but is only really good at keeping ordinary humans out; as far as youkai go, she's pretty low tier.
Just being able manipulate chi and being a martial artist probably doesn't mean much in a place like Gensokyo, especially when you have freaks that can just rape reality.

I think that stuff like abusing time manipulation is that you could kinda mess the way you act and just alienate yourself socially. But there's probably more to it.
One possibility is that due to time powers Sakuya ages way slower than humans and thus got tired of seeing everyone around her die before her, maybe even her own children.
Thus she seeks the company of vampires who will outlive her instead of the other way around.
The Makai relation might also be her for some reason seeking power getting into Makai and doing a devil's pact that gave her the power over space and time in exchange of her dreams (Though I first thought the Soku ending was just talking about slacking off).

Also Patche might be from Makai considering her being a witch at birth, would be funny if Patche and Sakuya already met each other before Remi though.
Honestly I don't know if I've seen any fanworks relating the SDM crew's past with makai.
