Why would this even matter? Saya no Uta even had the same exact "Lovecraftian" themes used in countless other games and films.

Turning Saya into a comic is really just a bad idea in general. What carries it is the kind of uniquely horrifying imaginings that the prose generates in the mind of the reader, and by giving the reader much more visual basis for the story totally destroys that. Saya no Uta's main advantages as a VN are creepy music and ominous backgrounds, with only the occasional character shot or super close up of something terrible to unnerve the reader.

Maybe, but I think to anyone who isn't a 15 year old saya no uta wasn't scary in the slightest maybe a little disturbing, but disturbing can certainly be established while seeing the whole picture hence, probably, why the comic is drawn so grimdark.

The main attraction to the story was suspense and romance, which we're already ruined to because we've finished the story and know the ending, so we can hardly be critics of this.

Comics are usually paced better than this. I'm pretty sure Saya no Uta got a 2 shot comic because IDW did not believe that the comic would succeed, and they're probably right.

I think the story needed at least a 4 parter, like what most mini comic stories get. That and people who know not to blow their load in the first fucking issue.

Once again, this doesn't make sense. All modern horror tends to have Lovecraft themes, but there isn't a specific set of rules that must be followed or anything.

Nitro+ was probably inspired more by Western horror films (back when they were still good) than Lovecraft himself. This would also explain their reverse-wapanese ways.

If I hadn't read Saya no Uta I would have absolutely no clue what this is about and not in the good "mysterious disturbing stuff is happening" kind of way, it's jumping all over the place, the pacing in this is atrocious.

Absolutely nothing is left unknown in this comic, in contrast to the original game, which refrained from showing you a full-screen CG of Saya's true form a third of the way in and- like Lovecraft in many of his stories- emphasized that the sight is so horrific it causes humans who witness it to lose their grip on sanity.

It's not just a matter of tact; it's hubris to think you can depict a creature that would drive somebody mad from the mere sight of it.

Your words ring true. The creature they showed in this comic, while certainly looking disturbing, is way off from actually instilling horror in the reader. It just looks plain too normal by today's stadnards. We've just seen too many things, especially with modern movies and computer animations. The thrill of leaving it unkown and just describing it worked much much better IMO.

I don't know what I imagined Saya's true form like, but definitely not like that and I certianly hope I don't lose my original image. This is what I dislike about movies, they overwrite your original image you had while reading the book. Though I guess a visual novel is the wrong thing to place that claim on.

Anyways, my point is that in this time where we have been shown everything, a thing unshown has a lot more impact.

The cheesiness of the dialog is what will keep me awake at night.

Honestly, I feel the "horror of the unknown" for SnU is the usual theme where the main character doesn't know why bad/strange things are happening to him. And of course when he finally uncovers the truth he's then eventually destroyed by it in some way.

Saya wasn't the real monster anyways; the humans were. Best overused but still enjoyable horror theme ever.

I think it's better if it's not so much there physical form, so much as there mind warping abilities that would drive people insane. Because really, there's nothing an average modern human can be driven insane by simply looking at them. Grossed out, disgusted, yes, but we are far different from the humanity of eighty years ago.

But that's an actual spoiler that people wouldn't know straight away. I'm pretty sure almost everyone guessed that Saya wasn't exactly human as soon as she appeared on screen even without knowing anything before reading it. I did, anyway. Well, the writing was worse than this for obvious reasons, but at least Ashley Wood's art for it looked good.

Well, it's not like the comic didn't fail completely at scaring the fuck out of me, after all, such a fist-in-the-face level blunt butchering of a good story is quite scary. They basically didn't pull any punches at ruining any tension, emotion, pacing or even style that the original had.

Man, this is just wrong. They can't show Saya's form this early on, if not ever! I can tell they felt that they needed to do some sort of stinger to improve sales for the next issue, but the flow of this entire issue is bad enough.

Biggest complaint outside of losing the stinger intro from the VN: Saya feels more like she's just using the MC.

In the VN, what made Saya such a great character is that the story could be interpreted as her using Fuminori, if it weren't for the fact that Nitro+ does an outstanding job of conveying how both Fuminori and Saya are completely and utterly alone and alienated from the rest of the world.

You don't quite get that here. Saya just kinda shows up with very little characterization, and Josh keeps swinging back and forth between "normal with a bad headache" and "seeing some weird shit, but rarely anything more than your standard bad acid trip".
