Looking around on the JP era board, apparently the Chinese version of eraGvT is still alive (or at least more alive than the original JP branch itself) and there's been a bit of a flurry of activity again with people still interested in eraGvT trying to port over a few additions from the Chinese version.

But it looked like as if the Chinese side development were also slowing down though and there were some issues with that new faction as well that does weird things to the current mechanics (probably due to code spaghetti).

The biggest issue with a real world year system would be the gameplay progression flow. Right now, I do not believe anybody is interested in tackling something like that, either coding for or testing it. That said, if people are interested in it, go ahead. More than you think. I don't really agree that progression flow is the main obstacle, there are serious implementation problems here. The game treats months and seasons as the same thing which means every single reference is going to need to be checked for possible breakage, and there are a thousand or two. It's difficult to estimate how long it would actually take because you tend to find unexpected rabbit holes which can quickly grow complex, I'd expect at least a days labor but it'd likely end up being more. The time commitment isn't even the biggest issue though, it's that any change you make to the code needs to be weighed against possible future issues from Japanese contributors, and avoiding conflicts is high priority especially since people who work on these sorts of things may not be around to fix new bugs in the future. This would likely touch hundreds of files and would mean anything involving days of the month would have the potential to create new bugs, and those are referenced relatively often in dialogue.

This doesn't even account for the weather system, which would probably end up mostly scrapped unless someone wanted to get a meteorology PhD and rewrite it.

If there were 365 days in a year with absolutely no other changes, then yes, it would be boring. Not even really imbalanced, because the only thing that would affect anything is farming getting locked for 3 months, but farming isn't the only way to earn money. (or hell, just make a glasshouse upgrade to enable farming during winter) But that's not what's being discussed. The entire point is to expand the year to allow time for more special celebrations and to make each more unique by lasting longer, like 2, 3 days. Preparation, the event, cleanup, all the while you're free to engage in the festivities. Think Halloween. A week for Easter. That would incentivize people to work on events just for it, which would in turn make users look forward to it instead of just glancing at the one line denoting a special day and grinding the same skills and the same date spot as the previous day.

Can you actually explain what would be imbalanced about a longer year? Why would the pacing be broken in any way?

I feel like trying to properly implement a real-time calendar into TW would be better off on its own branch, because it would require so many changes to everything that it won't really be 'TW' anymore. The pacing would need to match this, and content will need to be altered or added in to 'fill the gap'. If I was to compare the kind of changes one would be looking at, it'll be like when Cataclysm:DDA changed from its original timing system (30 or 60 days per 'season'? I don't remember) to a 365 day calendar.

So, what would require changing? For one, favour/reliability gains would have to be dropped to maybe 1/10th - 1/20th of what it currently is, in that you'd mostly see +0-2's for a really long time until you really become friends with them. TSP should no longer be something that you just automatically recharge every night; it should be something that charges over time, so that you can't just simply TSP to get around the longer days, not at least until you're very competent at it (maybe make it a skill?). This would also be better served by having (You) based in your own 'home' map instead, so that you need to spend hours walking around to various locations, unless you learn how to fly to shorten the time or have enough TSP charged up to save time. Add reasons to go outside of your home constantly until you're set up properly; like maybe the need for food and water? Would give a reason to use animal traps more and allow for opportunities to train Cooking ('outdoor cooking'), and if food is made to go 'off' after x days, then all the more to go out (until you can get the Kappa to invent a fridge). Crops would also need to have their growth times changed to their realistic components, so that SDM gardening services become much more valuable. Maybe make crops seasonal as well, so you can't grow some crops unless it's the right season or you grow them in a greenhouse.

In sort, let's turn era The World into era Touhou Moon/Factory. That's a good starting point for it all and then we can implement everything else to complement it, like 2hus actually farming (or pranking farmers), human mobs doing farming around the Human Village, etc.. The most difficult part would be making 2hus have good/smart pathfinding so that they don't starve/dehydrate because they're stuck doing a task. Though maybe better to make them exempt or else Touhou Moon/Factory would end up with the troubles the NAS version has, with needing to teleport 2hus who would otherwise not be able to pathfind to bathrooms properly. Maybe this is a bit too much for a game made on the era engine, actually.

At least with hunting you can get hints on the stuff you haven't found yet. & You can always check where/when you've left your traps on your character's info page. The only thing I'd really want to change is being able to retrieve traps during TSP regardless of weather, or if you have an umbrella.
