Marisa is the type of girl who would playfully punch your arm and tease you about some other girl walking by, completely oblivious to the fact that she herself is the object of your affections. Perhaps it is because she could never imagine someone actually wanting her as a woman? Maybe she does know, but simply doesn't feel the same way about you? Or, could it be that she's afraid of ruining your friendship should things go wrong?
You have no way of knowing, of course. Marisa is a talented liar when she needs to be.

Au contraire, she lies so often and so blatantly that when she actually puts some effort in it flies right on by.
She would damn well know that something funny was up,and might even suspect that the only man to pay any sort of attention to the weird midget in the woods outside of when she's helping Reimu might actually quite like her.
Unfortunately for her, she has a huge inferiority complex from comparing herself to the shrine maiden all the time.
It's not that she doesn't know, it's that she doesn't think herself deserving of a loving husbando.
That cute smile of her's hides a dark trauma, one gained from years of playing total second fiddle in everything she does, from magic to incident resolvation. Not to mention she ran away from her home to pursue magic in the first place, so the fact that she sacrificed so much to be fairly limited in her sorcery must weigh down on her pride a lot.
Do you think she enjoys having her signature spells be ones she stole from The Forbidden One and Yuuka? You think her justifications of having "improved" it and the fact that she's able to pull it off at all are anything more than another layer of lies she tells the world to bring her some comfort from the fact that all in all she's a pretty mediocre magician?
Marisa is a deeply, deeply troubled young girl. You can [Not] fix her.

Yes, she does.
But first, she needs to believe in herself.
She's been riding the teachings of The Forbidden One for too long, what was intended as some quick training to give Her a decent subordinate quickly before Reimu came to seal her away again has become the cornerstone of an independant young woman's entire life.
Truth be told, she hit her maximum potential a while ago, she's just so utterly terrified at this to ever admit it to anyone, least of all her best friend whom she sparrs with all the time.
Reimu's been getting lazy in her training for years now, and only moves into high gear when she really needs to.
Marisa isn't even a close match for her anymore.
Alice has kept her Ultimate Magic to herself ever since the Makai incident, Patchouli is too ill to put up more than a token fight, She has been missing for so long that Marisa has even given up hope on ever seeing her again, and Yuuka has slowed down and retired from the game ever since the big fight with Shinki.
Sure, she's pretty strong in a dual, she can even hold her own without spell card rules, she wouldn't live in the forest of magic if she couldn't handle herself, but her life is finite and time marches ever onward.
One day, one day sooner than she'd like, she's going to make a mistake, one that will cost her her head, and that'll be it.
Living on the edge has it's risks, by definition. And she's been balancing the knife edge for a long, long time.
Do you think Marisa believes in a god? In an afterlife of bliss?
She's been to hell anon. She's seen the kind of person that ends up there. Heaven is full of those who walked the earth centuries before her birth, people far more virtueous than she.
There will be no peaches for her after the curtains close. She knows. The Yama don't lie.
All of this, all of it, combines to give her the most horrible knowledge of all.
Not how / when she will die, anyone can figure that out given her lifestyle.
Not how the world will end; The Lunarians figured that one out millennia ago.
She knows her own limit, her own fate and destiny.
There isn't anything more there anon.
She's flown as high as she can, and she's not even twenty yet.
A whole building block of the human psyche has cracked and fallen apart in her mind, one that is supposed to give Man drive and will to go forth and achieve.
Her life, short as it has been, will be nothing more than a tiny footnote in the Gensokyo Chronicle, and a few memories in three people's minds, people who will probably forget her after a few hundred more years.
The legacy of the Kirisame name will be but a puddle of water on a hot summer's day, slowly evaporating before there isn't even a damp spot on the ground.

Just have a bunch of children with her so she can teach them magic, that'll fix it. Enough generations of ordinary magicians learning ordinary magic from their ordinary parents will eventually produce something extraordinary- moreso than it already has. Shoo, shoo, dread.

Each person leads their own life. Comparison is futile and meaningless. Intention is everything.
So long as one acts with goodness they will be fine. Her garden may be a mere flower next to Reimu's orchard, but its hers, and above all that is what matters in the end.
True failure is acceptance. So long as the fire of your heart burns onward you will have not failed. A million falls does not invalidate a single stand.

No matter what, I can't imagine Marisa being older than 12 at most. All fan art of her is borderline loli, she's a midget in all official manga, and is probably the least lewdable 2hu of them all.

Considering Touhou seems to follow a similar timeline to our own, and considering Marisa would have had to have been at least, let's say 8, for EoSD, Marisa would have to be at least 28 in the current day. She's over Christmas Cake age, anon.

My shitposts have blown themselves out of proportion.
I thought the idea that she's desperately compensating for a lack of self-love was interesting.
have a marisa fumo with an AK-74 as compensation for the existential crisis.

No, it's directly parallel to real world time, you just forget that when it comes to actual storytelling, ZUN is a hack who worships the status quo, so nothing will ever happen no matter how much time passes.

Leaning in to kiss Marisa!
Instead you hear a whistle!
You feel a painful burning pain on your chest!
You see Marisa smiling apologetically!
