I had an acquaintance who worked as an interpreter for cons and I've been to a ton of cons. I haven't spoken with said acquaintance in a long time and he hasn't done that type of work in ages either as he's been working in Japan.

Anyway, huge grain of salt with this but I'm under the impression they use their connections, probably through companies marketing shit, but a lot of the staff probably build their own connections over time too. Larger cons appear to send people over to Japan to meet with people too.

Also all these cons that have Japanese guests have Japanese speaking interpreters with them so I'm sure they are able to contact them competently. I'm under the impression that they pay their expenses and such too and if you look at VAs twitters and such they usually use them as mini vacations in a lot of cases.
