I've been trying to use game2text to have some kind of live-OCR thing to help me mine stuff that I can't easily extract the text from, but I feel like it is somewhat clunky. Is there any other option, or any other way to use it that I can just "press a button and select stuff on my screen" (like window's alt+shift S/Snipping Tool) and OCR it?

>When reading, do you put every word you don't know into Anki? (I'm thinking not so you don't get overwhelmed.)
Yes, you do. The point of learning a language is to actually learn the language. Vocabulary is the first step anyone takes to begin parsing and understanding sentences. There isn’t a course in the world that isn’t gonna make you sit down and learn the vocabulary that you’re looking at.
If you know what the English interpretation for a word is, then you should know the Japanese equivalent. A big factor of fluency is your vocabulary.
>Also, how helpful is looking up definitions if you don't start studying them right away?
A lot less helpful than if you just sit down and study them, but something’s better than nothing.

this works fantastically for me and in my limited experience is more accurate than the sharex one but i might be wrong about that:
https://github.com/blueaxis/Cloe
and you can change the hotkey combinations.

also there's this page:
https://anacreondjt.gitlab.io/docs/texthooker/
cloe copies the ocr'd text to your clipboard. if you combine that with the clipboard inserter addon, anything you ocr with cloe will be automatically pasted into that anacreon page and you can look up the words with yomichan. i think yomichan has built-in functionality to lookup anything in your clipboard too, but i prefer the anacreon page since it makes it easy to look up a previous sentence again if you forget the context for something.

there is an open source OCR with a CLI that supports Japanese, called tesseract
if you're a linuxGOD you can just use this bash script with minor adjustments according to your needs:

#!/bin/sh
SCRIPT="jpn_vert"
#horizontal switch
echo $1 | grep h && SCRIPT="jpn"
scrot -o -s -F /tmp/text.png
echo "$(tesseract /tmp/text.png - -l $SCRIPT | tr -d ' ')" | xclip

I have this bound to a shortcut with a modifier according to whether I have vertical or horizontal script, you can make a rectagular selection lique with snipping tool and it tries to OCR it and puts it in clipboard
it doesn't work so good if the background isn't a uniform color, so if you're dealing with a VN where you can neither make the text boxes opaque and it doesn't work with agth you're gonna have a bad time

on windows, i just run manga_ocr in the background by starting it with cmd. it automatically detects horiz/vert orientation based on aspect ratio.
i take screenshots using window's built-in shortcut tool (win+shift+s) and manga_ocr automatically catches this and updates the clipboard to contain the ocr'd text which i like to pick up via a clipboard autoinserter on edge.

I looked into it and I think it's a muPDF issue
for whatever reason they don't just ship their own fonts, they also use them over system fonts even when those cover all characters, and moreover they ignore CSS font overrides in epub files and user styles
this seems like incredibly shitty design, like what makes you decide the font, one of the most basic OS services, is part of the scope of your project, but not the user's ability to adjust the font?
the most straightforward fix would probably be to replace https://github.com/ArtifexSoftware/mupdf/blob/master/resources/fonts/han/SourceHanSerif-Regular.ttc with whatever you like and build it yourself, but then it will again have that one font until you recompile

So, I've learned hiragana and I'm halfway through katakana, in fact I plan on finishing katakana tonight; I spaced out my studying, only learning five new characters a day, as to not overwhelm myself and forget everything. I studied both hira/kata using only YouTube videos and charts, and they've helped me out a ton so far. I have ADHD so I lose interest quickly when I stare at a book, or in this case, a static web page full of textwalls. But I guess it's advised not to learn grammar through YouTube videos? I know everyone here has their own preferences, but does everyone really use decks and websites over easy to understand videos? It's just, you see, I get a little nervous when I read things like
>the wrong resource will cripple your comprehension of Japanese
Not to make this tl;dr, but basically, this is my plan after I finish katakana.

I never said that. I'm just not afraid to admit that videos are genuinely helpful; it's honestly the best way to learn the stroke order of all the characters in a simple, easy to understand way. Implying you actually learned Japanese, and you're not just a crab bullying a newfag to the japanese language like me for fun, you should know how important it is to take it easy. They are mostly after the free streaming sites. They can't even protect their Hollywood movies, so who cares about them.

>> No.44003409

i would be willing to pay for a streaming service that has all/most currently airing anime and with jp subs and uncensored and doesnt region lock you

https://video.unext.jp/genre/anime
seems to be that but you cant use it unless you have a japanese telephone number and credit card
not sure if it actually delivers though since i cant even test it

I tried reading recently and I kept having to look up every other word, and most looked really familiar. It was really frustrating. I think I just need to refresh all this vocab before bothering with reading.
