Yes, you do. The point of learning a language is to actually learn the language. Vocabulary is the first step anyone takes to begin parsing and understanding sentences. There isn’t a course in the world that isn’t gonna make you sit down and learn the vocabulary that you’re looking at.
If you know what the English interpretation for a word is, then you should know the Japanese equivalent. A big factor of fluency is your vocabulary.

I have this bound to a shortcut with a modifier according to whether I have vertical or horizontal script, you can make a rectagular selection lique with snipping tool and it tries to OCR it and puts it in clipboard
it doesn't work so good if the background isn't a uniform color, so if you're dealing with a VN where you can neither make the text boxes opaque and it doesn't work with agth you're gonna have a bad time
if you use w*ndows you can probably replicate this setup but it sounds like ball cancer

on windows, i just run manga_ocr in the background by starting it with cmd. it automatically detects horiz/vert orientation based on aspect ratio.
i take screenshots using window's built-in shortcut tool (win+shift+s) and manga_ocr automatically catches this and updates the clipboard to contain the ocr'd text which i like to pick up via a clipboard autoinserter on edge.

This is what I've been doing for a week or so, it slowly whittled down from 1700 to 1500, but I think those 200 were just words I hadn't forgotten.

There's a lot of words where I forgot, but I see them, then instantly remember them again and get them on my second try. I looked into it and I think it's a muPDF issue
for whatever reason they don't just ship their own fonts, they also use them over system fonts even when those cover all characters, and moreover they ignore CSS font overrides in epub files and user styles
this seems like incredibly shitty design, like what makes you decide the font, one of the most basic OS services, is part of the scope of your project, but not the user's ability to adjust the font?
the most straightforward fix would probably be to replace https://github.com/ArtifexSoftware/mupdf/blob/master/resources/fonts/han/SourceHanSerif-Regular.ttc with whatever you like and build it yourself, but then it will again have that one font until you recompile
I would open an issue about it but it seems like one of those "won't fix sweetie" bonehead dev moments
