I think you learn best with whoever is 1 or 2 levels above you. Might apply to everything. Of course you should also borrow a book about the topic if you can and maybe get the furniture that boosts the skill if any exists.
As far as combat goes there's no furniture, but you get massive boosts from actually defeating people for the first time, and fighting them after that is also typically a good idea. It's why you can only fight them once a day. My tip, find people who don't have any experience in combat, train them to level 1 and promptly defeat them. It's the easiest way to get combat related achievements.
Mixing also lets you prepare a few special items that can boost your combat ability, you'll probably need that for the hardest fights.

Recently started playing EraTohoTW again after a few years break.

The folder of the ERB files can be any name, it's just that the Japanese used japanese names when using folders for their ERBs. You're free to use English names and put them willy nilly if you want to, since Era will still read it as long as it's in the ERB folder.
