I think there's truth to it, and the VN pushed the idea in the later arcs. We've seen the club members develop through the fragments beyond just direct fragment memories, they subconsciously change in some ways.

Failed to have the suspense atmosphere of the 2006 Deen anime aside from a couple of episodes.

Goofy bloody scenes people couldn't even believe were actually real during Gou's airing (Sotsu's original death scenes, like Rena -> Rina and Mion -> Shion were generally better though).

Rehashed arcs in Gou where we were told to look at the differences and that every detail was intentional... only when Sotsu came out suddenly we were being told to not look too closely at things... in spite of the series wasting almost 13 episodes on Gou retreads. Nope, it wasn't even part of R07's plot in the end as he later revealed. His story outline turned out to be really vague and something like that scene was just a very generic description about Rena attacking Keiichi, but dying. Everything about how the attack happened and the scene played out was left to the anime staff that came up with the clock vs knife stuff. R07 said he was expecting something more like them fighting for the knife and then stabbing each other violently with it due to the craziness of the situation.

Of course, we only learned about this post-Sotsu. While Gou was airing in interviews and such they claimed every detail had meaning
