The game probably gave them a paper claymore to start with. I mostly have experience with lich characters, but when strength is really low it gives characters weapons made of really light materials to not overburden them at start.

Yeah, Mutant isn't really suitable for beginners. Pretty much anything else (other than Snail) would've gone better.
Also, why no pets? If you just don't want them that's fine, but if you're having trouble surviving a little girl with a twohanded weapon is a big help.

Is Elea a good race for claymores?

elves are a challanging race for a claymore. the only good bit is that you can carry around a claymore made of ether with less fear.

its good you have stable gold income but you should also focus on raising stats.
for stat potential-
get a pet with cooking (slave trader is quickest bet) raise your impression and make sure you go to sleep between 9 pm and midnight.
get a pot of fusion. herb in is much better use for herbs than simply eating them
pot of fusion picnic baskets. you can even use picnic basket when you are full!

to straight up raise stats, pay bronze at the inn. to raise skills, pay bronze at the bar.

That's exactly how to raise it quickly, use relevant action while in high potential. Yes, most dungeons are random but some aren't like the main dungeon of the game, Lesimas

Most are. You'll run into some tied to quests like Puppy Cave, Lesmias, the Minotaur's Nest, etc. But there are also a bunch of random non-quest dungeons you can clear (and after a while, an earthquake will reset them for you). If you want to beat stuff to death as a beginner, I'd recommend a sturdier race like a Dwarf or Juere, Predator class. Fight unarmed or with claws (and tonfas if you eventually find some), to level Martial Arts.

oomSEST also has a specific martial artist class (Fighter), but I haven't played that branch myself.

If you don't have it already, you can learn Analysis (called Sense Quality in older versions) from the trainer in Yowyn, which can tell you basic equipment quality and whether an item is cursed. Hold items for long enough, and you'll identify them yourself.

Once you get better at earning cash and recognizing loot that's worth collecting, paying to ID is actually more efficient in the early game. You'll eventually be able to make your own scrolls of identification with a gem cutter item and the Jeweler skill.

When you eat a piece of raw equipment that has skill or stat bonuses to it, you gain a bit of xp to those skills or stats. It's more a meme than anything else, popularised by Sseth, as there are far better food sources of stat xp than guzzling raw gear even early game.

your home has a dropped item limit based on the tier of the house (cave holds 100, castle/palace hold 400). As for ways to get around it
