You know, I see a lot of shmup fans decrying Touhou, but never have I seen a Touhou fan play another shmup and get defensive, pick favorites, or be as generally butthurt as everyone else.

Not to insinuate that there isn't a lot of fun to be had in the rest of the shootemup genre that lays beyond the Touhou series, but people who try to claim that Touhou is shitty are trolling at best, pic related at worst

A combination of good graphics, good music, good gameplay, good characters, and good universe.

There are shmups with good soundtracks, shmups with good (or better) gameplay, shmups with good characters, but no other shmup has the combination that Touhou has.

Which is why Touhou is massively popular and most other shmups are not.

It's more of a case of "hate the game because of the fanbase" than because of popularity. A lot of people see the absolutely retarded gaiafag fanbase that touhou has and tell themselves they hate the games without ever giving them a chance. There's also a lot of bad/mediocre stg players who think Touhou is "too easy" despite being, you know, terrible, because they want to look like HARDCORE GAMERZ on the internet.
