I feel like anime cards can be helpful for not associating japanese words with english ones by avoiding putting the english definition on the back and just thinking about the context of what you watched

if you use anki the way it is suggested here you will soon reach a point where most new words can easily be guessed on your anime cards during your reps and your brain will completely skip the internalization process because it always looks for shortcuts and this isnt something you can fight against
you wont be able to reliably tell during your reps if your sense of understanding is stemming from actual recall of the word or your brain hazily and lazily putting together pieces of your memory using the hints provided by the kanji on the front and it creates a very strong visual dependency which is undesirable
