the fact you're interested in reading already means that you'll pick up kanji quickly (relatively speaking. it's still a long process)
it's only a roadblock if you make it one. if you decide to study kanji in isolation before actually reading, then yeah it's a massive one.
if you accept that you'll constantly encounter unknown kanji and just take them as they come, then no it's not that big of a deal as long as you're doing it in an environment where lookups are fast.

None of the books I had to use were bad, per se, they just weren't appropriate for the goals of the course. Some of the books we were... "gently recommended to use" were so basic or presented material in a way so counter to what the professor was trying to do that we would have been better off without them. I want to start practicing my output skills because they're severely lagging behind my comprehension skills, but the usual methods don't appeal to me. I feel too bad and awkward about "forcefully" turning natives into practice partners, especially when they're not asking for it in the first place. It must be annoying for them. I'd want to actually be able to express myself more comfortably and hold conversations with substance in broken but understandable Japanese before doing that. On the other hand, finding English speaking dekinais to do Genki I-tier conversation excercises with also sounds like ass, because my understanding of the language will be better than theirs. There also wouldn't be any useful feedback because of that.

Are you sure the original font includes those glyphs? They are rather rarely used so the font is probably missing them and in that case the text rendering engine will usually try to arbitrarily pick up some replacement font which has those glyphs. Of course in that case there will be some mismatch between glyphs.
