Apparently the という here is used to "emphasize an idea". Is this standard grammar because the only thing i can found in grammar resources about という at the end of sentence is about "hearsay". Which is clearly not the case here since the professor is talking about a device he made himself.

という comes from と言う

I don't know you, but from my experience my biggest problem with learning Japanese was simply motivation. If you've been here for 5 years and haven't improved much, you have to ask yourself: why not?

When I was studying Japanese in my home country, I had no problem doing extra work above and beyond what was in my classes because I was really keen. By the time I got to Japan (a few years after finishing uni) and had spent a bit of time working for a Japanese employer, I got pretty burned out. I just didn't care about learning more; of course I thought it would be *nice* to know more Japanese so I could have more conversations/get around easier, but I could only occasionally work up the motivation to actually do anything to study. Part of this was being busy with work and having a mostly foreign friend circle/foreign girlfriend. Part of it was being pretty disillusioned by how I was treated by my employer, and knowing I was leaving Japan in a couple years with no plans to come back. When I left I was probably a mediocre N4 in JLPT terms, which wasn't much better than when I'd arrived.

I spent the next 8 years back in my country. I continued to be nagged by the thought that I *ought* to get back into learning Japanese, because it was previously something I'd really enjoyed and been good at. I use the GTD system and even had a "study" section in my weekly reviews for that period, and I just left it blank week after week, month after month, year after year. Seriously.

My sister is living in Japan with her family and I finally went back to visit last year. I wound up getting covid on the plane and spent most of the time in iso. I got three and a half days on my own not in a foreigner bubble. That was actually all it took to find the motivation to study Japanese again. I guess I didn't have far to fall but despite a lack of use it didn't feel like my Japanese had deteriorated that much, but I felt a keen desire to be better so that I could have more interesting conversations, do more things, etc. I remembered how much I liked the on-the-fly creativity that speaking a foreign lagnauge entails, and how genuinely cool it is to have little random interactions with people out in the inaka who don't speak English. (There's a bit more to it than just these, but it's kind of hard to articulate.) At any rate, somehow that three and a half days had gotten me back in touch with the "why" of studying Japanese for me, and I haven't had any problems with motivation since.

I had wanted to come back for more visits (still do), but also now have some professional goals that include coming back to Japan to work for a couple years. When I got back to my own country, I set a goal to pass N3, which was something I had meant to do my first time in Japan (even registered for it at one point) but never really got very close. I decided I'd do a mock N5 exam after a few months study just as a warmup, then N4 a few months after that. I knew I could pass the N5 without studying and possibly the same with N4, but wanted to go back and fill in any gaps, and they served as good waypoints to help keep me motivated and on track.

I surprised myself at how easily I got back into a daily Anki habit, and smashed the N5 and then N4 (the latter was definitely helped by some study) and am about halfway through my N3 study, well on track to pass by my goal of midyear. I'm going to re-evaluate at that point and see if N2 by the end of the year is doable (I'm moving and starting a new job around the same time, so need to see if it's reasonable or if I should push it back to mid next year).

afaik, in unity, there are no default fallback fonts for CJK characters. if you type japanese text into a vanilla textmesh component, it gets rendered as squares until you import a font and make the textmesh use it. the dev probably imported a chinese font or used something off of the asset store that uses a chinese font by default.

there literally isn't an い in 規則 because its sound in the word is preceded by a consonant and there are no standalone consonants besides ん in japanese. the rule is simply that the combination of characters えい is pronounced as a long え, and this is unambiguous. the pronounciation of きそく doesn't have anything to do with え and い

yes that's why dogen is wrong about えい being ええ outside of verbs. many natives pronounce the い https://forvo.com/word/%E6%B0%B8%E9%81%A0/#ja

>>42820554
yes they are two different points, hence the "also" in my post. you can't make a standalone "k" sound. if you try to say "cry" out loud slowly, you will notice you are actually saying くらい. the "k" is always "accented" by some sort of vowel, and in the case of 規則 it's い. you can hear it here https://forvo.com/word/%E8%A6%8F%E5%89%87/#ja
whether or not that counts as a full い or whatever is just linguistic circlejerking.

>yes they are two different points, hence the "also" in my post.
my first two sentences were about there being no い in 規則, but my third sentence was regarding a separate point
>whether or not that counts as a full い or whatever is just linguistic circlejerking.
you're talking about mapping sounds back to strings of kana. that is not unambiguous, but it doesn't have anything to do with going from strings of kana to sounds (pronunciation in japanese), an unambiguous process. there is no い in 規則 because the kana representation for the word 規則 is きそく, and the character い does not appear in the string. that's it. no other factor is relevant, and further considerations are unnecessary.
in particular, identifying a kana character "inside" another, such as by taking the sound of き and identifying a part of that sound as being the sound of い, is not part of the process
if i had to guess, i'd say the confusion stems from the fact that people often lazily say that a word has "an い in it" to mean both "an い sound in its pronunciation" and "the kana character for い in its kana representation," but these interpretations are easily confused in these contexts

What does Tim-Tim reference here?
The context is that Chihaya sees 「男の人の真ん中にぶら下がってるの、なーんだ?」this puzzle on tv that implies dick and comes to the conclusion it is necktie and asks mc to solve it; to prove her superior intellect, this being the mcs response.
I would assume Tim-Tim here as pee-pee but he just says it so calmly and without any fluster that it just doesn't make any sense.

It depends a lot, if you study grammar every day, learn vocabulary every day, dive in and read VERY children's stuff, or manga like Yotsuba, it takes you 5/6 months to read it more or less well, and from there you will advance.
You will never read something from the beginning and do it well, it is not a nice experience and it will frustrate you, that's why you have to put a lot of effort and don't get discouraged if you see a lot of kanji and you don't understand shit.
Do the basics, learn vocab, read a guide and advance, do anki and all that.
Once you have a good base of words, start with something very simple, like children's manga, or TODAI news.
It's not an easy path, but you can do it, I'm proof of that.
I started in 2019 without knowing a single kanji and now I'm N2 and I can read things pretty well, although I always come across new kanji.
If i can, you can, i'm literally a retard.

The word たりうる is a combination of the verb stem たり and the auxiliary verb うる. The verb stem たり indicates that there are various possibilities or examples, and the auxiliary verb うる indicates that something is possible or can be done. Therefore, たりうる means "able to do various things" or "possible to be in a certain state."

In the context of the sentence you provided, たりうる is used to describe Japan's growing strength and potential to become a leading nation. It means "able to become a first-class country," "able to reach the level of a leading nation," or "having the potential to be a powerful nation."

Language classes in general are only really useful when you are at an advanced level and want to improve your writing skills or grammar.
By the time American kids take English classes in school, they already have a lot of vocab and can have basic conversations. The best way to get your language skill up to the point where any of that matters is through input.

Classes are bad for basically every language that isn't latin based because they go mega slow, especially for Japanese, unless you want to explore "how the language works", but that isn't actually useful because you probably want to "read and speak japanese" instead. In a university course you'd probably spend a whole semester (or two) learning Kana, pronunciation, basic particles etc where you could easily learn that on your own in a week unless you have legit brain damage.

Don't waste time and money on classes, I recommend you pirate the pdf called "Remembering the Kana" and read that in a day or two, then read Tae Kim's guide until you get bored of it (they both provide non obvious information concerning the basic structural things about the language that is not as succinctly explained elsewhere) and download a core 2k anki deck(literacy baseline, most of the decks are poorly organized for various reasons but I'm too lazy to make one that actually teaches words in a useful order).

Everyone is different, When I was in middle school memorized kanji for a year and didn't study japanese grammar at all. Then 2 years ago I repeated a cycle of reading a grammar book, and a bunch of graded readers 10 times in a year, and now I can read and can read pretty much anything I want even math/technical shit, but can't really speak or write with any speed, and my accent is NOT, listening would probably still be n4 if I didn't watch dogen, now it's ~n2.
I would say if you have a lot of free time, grammar and reading are the way to go, if your goal is reading.
If you goal is speaking and listening, I would say dogen and active listening with memorized material.
If you are just beginning and have no time then do srs for ~30 minutes a day, It's not that longer won't help, but that there are better ways to spend time, if you have more of it.

Well historically it makes sense.
It prevents peasants from ever truly rising up because they simply don't fucking know what the middle class is even talking about.
And the middle class doesn't know what the upper class is talking about because they lacked the vocabulary to keep up.

Even today politics and higher education and the academia there is almost impenetrable unless you dedicate a certain amount of time JUST to learn the multitudes of phrases and terminology associated with it.

In Classical Chinese, that’s more or less true, but the Kangxi character reference alone lists something like 60 thousand, I think. But again, a huge chunk of what exists is just variants, dialectical characters, just plain miscopies and errors, proper names, etc., so it really isn’t nearly as bad as it looks at first.

https://lukesmith.xyz/articles/notes-on-learning-languages/
If you just listened to Luke you would have made it.
Production is king. For a computer analogy I learned to write shells scrips throught this process.
1) have problem
2) write shell script to solve it
3) read man pages when I was stuck
4) rewrite the shell script to do as little as possible
5) check if this is the standard or equivalent to it.
For japanese
1) Think of an Japanese/english sentence
2) Try to write/modify it in Japanese
3) reference textbook when stuck
4) rewrite it in the simplest Japanese possible
5) check if it's correct and common Japanese

After doing both for a little while, I have no problem reading shell or Japanese, despite spending almost no time actually reading shell or Japanese.
The problem with learning a language through input is that you have no idea what is happening in other people's heads, so you don't (and will never) get the process of putting words together.
Think about how you construct sentences in English, do you get that from reading English? Of course not.
Having your own writing to compare the standard to is worth infinitely more than the standard by itself, as you know the though process behind your own writing and thus, can infer the though process behind the standard (as well as measures such as runtime, saftey, simplicity, idiomaticness)

I assume he is talking about a flash card program, wherein he adds full sentences that you know all but 1 word, and that adding sentences where you know all but 2, or 3 words are understandable as well.
You know. Retard shit.
I don't know how you can "otherwise" understand a sentence that has three words removed unless you are a native

very stupid post
with programming you get instant and unambiguous feedback whether what you did was right or wrong because it either works or it doesn't
you're not going to get this with languages because the concept of right or wrong isn't that strong - as long as you're understandable a native will probably tell you that what you wrote is fine even if the grammar is not exactly right or the most natural. so how are you going to figure out what is the correct grammar or the most natural version of what you're trying to say?
the answer is: read and watch enough until you know intuitively what's correct and natural

Lmao, I'm not going to even bother correcting you just read the post you are replying to.
>the answer
Your answer makes no sense as I have already explained. You get a sense for writing natural japanese, through, suprise suprise, writing japanese and correcting your mistakes. Just like programming correcting your mistakes takes time and isn't instant, you are simply at a stage where you don't realize your mistakes.

>> No.42829832

imo you need to bridge the chasm between being able to tell when japanese sounds unnatural when you hear or read it and being able to do that subconsciously with your own thoughts in real time while talking yourself. logically i'd think that this chasm narrows the more you improve your intuition for sniffing out unnatural japanese in other peoples writing and speech. i'm not sure how much direct corrections by a native of your own speech will matter.

i'm an esl and every single person i know here that is fluent in english learned it through input. they watched cartoon network as kids, played cs 1.6 or wow etc etc. they never had classes or a teacher/conversation partner purposefully correct their sentences. one of my friends is now writing a doctorate and the other is writing an extremely technical finance/banking related masters thesis in english and their production is basically native level at this point. none of their schooling was in english up to this point either.
