Sorry, I hate to say it, but that's not really the case.
The gameplay was poor, the whole song magic system was overpowered and you'd just end up always using Boom to gain harmo levels, there was no strategy involved in the fights and getting the bad end was the only challange in the game.
The story was good, but the cosmospheres looked like they were added later, and most of the times broke the flow of the story or created strong incongruences between what the diver Lyner knew and what the real Lyner knew.
Then there are the graphics, I'm not bitching about 2D, but the spirites weren't that good and lacked animations, and the landscape around the tower looked like something that came out from 3DMax.
Let's not talk about the gamebreaking bug at the stone, I personally experienced that and having to start from scratch was frustrating to say the least.
The Grathmelting system may look innovative, but for someone that played atelier games or even mana khemia, it was just a boring rehashing.

For those of you with ATIII: does it have a hard mode? I really enjoy ATII's combat, but it's so fucking easy that only totally out of my league IPDs are giving me a challenge.
It's kind of hard to believe ATII has an easy mode. I really like the idea of being able to switch difficulty whenever you want, but there are limits to how easy a game can be.

Aurica is the best AT1 heroine, we are in minority tough.

Have been watching the playthrough videos at niconico of AT3, I barely somewhat understand what going on when theres voice acting but the parts when there are not, I'm hopelesly lost. At about 1 and half hour in (around the part with first dive in Finnel), the characters seem likeable so far. outo isn't that bad of protagonist so far, but nothing too special yet. As for Saki and Finnel, Sakis Sakiya (or whatever was her name) personality seemed fine the way she was as she had beaten some people before Aoto arrived to scene and Soma was cool in that she busted trough the window at one point. For Saki main personality, nothing suprising so far, altough she already purged to level 4 and turned people to cakes, and she did managaed to land quite slap on Aotos face. As for Finnel seems okay too so far, altough shes M in her cosmospehere while her mind guardian is S, interesting relationship I have to say.

If you want a quick summary of the game's plot.
Scientists discovers songstones.
Scientists estabilish Wave Science base on sound.
Scientists create the first three Reyvateils named origins, Frelia, Tilia and Eolia (Shurelia).
The planet tells all the living beings on the surface to fuck off and sea of death appears.
People build towers to escape the sea.
People on the first tower create and abuse Mule.
Mule gets batshit insane and wrecks shit up.
Shurelia seals Mule within the CC and uses a singer to keep her quiet, first game starts.
Mule awakens because Misha is no longer singing, Lyner searches for the PAJA.
Lyner find the PAJA and makes friend with Orica and meets his old childhood friend Misha.
Depending on whoever you choose Misha/Orica sings the PAJA, Shurelia gets hacked, then freed and to stop the tower she puts it on standby.
This is the extent of what you need to know about the first game, from the moment Shurelia sings SUSPEND the things on the second towers starts to degenerate until you start playing as Croix.

Well, there's a lot to do in ATII's combat. You can button mash and win, sure. But you can also follow the reveyteil requests and get bonuses, or work to charge a specific emotion for a special attack. The chain thing wasn't done very well in my opinion, but you can link the vanguards for more hits if you want. I like guarding a lot because I can minimize damage and I actually have something to do.
This is why i'd like the game to actually be hard: at like level seven, I hadn't even leveled my Revytiels at all, I killed two level 3 IPDS. That shit makes you feel like you're actually doing something. I kind of wish the different directional attacks actually did something different, though.

Ar Tonelico has enough genuine interest that you need not do so. Further, turning AT into the 2d equivalent of undying idol threads would only engender resentment.
