Instead of grinding your brain with just staring at a hiragana/katakana table, this is what I found useful (and kept my attention for more than a minute). But have a table handy to the side to check on your memorization.

For Hiragana, try reading summaries of anime or games that you like. Run the paragraph through some auto Japanese to romaji converter. Skip the kanji for now. Match up the hiragana and their pronunciations.

For Katakana, try using Pokemon and Digimon names as tools to help you memorize the characters, or some other interesting and BIG set of many katakana characters.

Learn one set fully first, then the other. It took me 2 month of casual reading to memorize one set, then only 2 weeks to memorize the other set, since they correspond, which is pretty nice.
Please make sure you recognize small differences between certain characters, like ぬ and め, since memorizing something wrongly takes more effort to correct.

Yeah, it shouldn't take any longer than this. The trick is to actually write them yourself - don't just stare at them. Write あいうえお on a sheet of paper a zillion times, move on to the next column, repeat. This makes 'em stick in your head like nothing else.
