As long as you are 100% sure of what a line is trying to communicate, you can forget the japanese altogether and just find the best way of saying it in english. Quite a few translations are actually just MTL edits or at least heavily assisted, the quality really just depends on how much Japanese the translator knows and how much time they're willing to spend on polished lines. But combing through it with MTL takes longer, so it's generally lower line count characters. I'm personally not a huge fan of MTL because of mistranslation potential, but admittedly we'd be in a worse situation without it, I think.

I've considered giving Kogasa shot (this is the Eiki guy), because I think having higher line count characters makes the game feel more alive than a bunch of <1000 line characters, especially because they're more likely to have unique gimmicks or scenarios. After all, no one really talks much about Suika or Larva, but Kaguya's Hourai Elixir event comes up all the time in these threads.

I've skimmed through Doremy's lines, and if she were translated, I think some of you would be wigging out about it. If you think prostate milking was bad...but that's a side project.

I don't know anything about japanese, but I did manage to translate Kyouko somewhat well in TW. What I told you is what I realized doing it. What takes the most time is trying to understand the meaning beyond the words through translators and dictionaries, but once you get it you don't even need to look at the source. It's especially true because the japs have very awkwards structures that don't work as well in english. Sometimes you need to rewrite the structure and change the choice of words, sometimes you even need to read on topics outside the game, like I did for the sutras Kyouko chants. It's actually a very nice creative endeavor.
