You did not read these books my dude, sorry to say. No one would call this 'reading'. And your goal based mindset is dangerous, while you claim to 'love effeciency' you are doing things in probably the most obtuse way possible.

To say 'well fuck traditional learning I just wanna read my anime shit' really shows you lack the respect for actually learning this. When you say you just want to learn 'specialty words' for reading you're assuming that that's all you need, that after Genki you have mastered the fundementals of Japanese, when in fact, you can pass N1 and still not be on that level. Of course you 'can' read a book at a below N5 level. You can also do that for damn near any language if you bust out an e-dictionary and take it a literal sentence at a time like you seem to be doing. It isn't impressive and there's reasearch backing that working like this hinders your reading ability more than it helps, as you're doing nothing but building your co-dependence on translation instead of naturally understanding the language.

This comment is really for people reading this post and not OP. Don't do this. Just don't. Study traditionally, move your way up the JLPT rungs and try to read at your level. There's nothing wrong starting with Pre-K picture books. Reading at your level, with minimal (meaning nearly no) outside help will skyrocket your reading speed, comprehension, and confidence. I understand your motivation might be reading sick anime books, but you have to realize what that means.

If you really want to speak this language properly, you have to give it respect when you learn it. You gotta knuckle down and learn SHIT tons of words you think you will never use (because if you stick with it long enough, they'll come up), you gotta learn the kanji and grammar forms that most Japanese people say 'we don't even use that'! (Which is a fucking lie everytime lmao). It isn't flashy but its a hell of a lot of a better method than this in the long run.

I have an old (aka first gen, very old) paperwhite and I never bought an ebook, I always just loaded in downloaded web novels (granted back then they were in english, not japanese).
It used to be that they couldn't read epub files, so you had to convert them to mobi/azw3 before loading them, but that's a 1 click operation, and new models now support epubs as well.

alright. it's from the same author as 黒の魔王 if you're familiar with that. it's pretty edgy and the author has no quarrels killing of characters he made you emotionally invested in. the author also has a thing for yandere and evil heroins and excels at writing them. he also hates NTR or things that put the heroines to shame. (side characters being ntr'd is fair game though). this will give you an idea of what to expect.

however the greatest strength of this author is that he's good at writing side characters. good in both writing characters you'll like and villains you'll enjoy hating. it's the only author where i actually enjoy reading chapters about side characters or from their pov. this helps make them not look like comical caricatures.
probably many reviewers got upset that not every character is either sucking the mc's dick or exist to make him look better.

another thing that probably upset a lot of reviewers is that the main heroine genuinely starts out as an annoying crybaby fat bitch. but she loses weight and becomes a hot amazon yandere berserker. i guess the author wanted a somewhat realistic reason of why a tall amazon beauty falls in love with our manlet mc.
the mc starts out a little faggy too. but quickly mans up as his confidence grows. recently he even started acting a like an asshole making fun at others. he's also fairly weak and doesn't power up until later, and even then most of his strength is based on having access to high quality resources.
the other heroines are a gyaru and a loli homonculus.

anyway you'll like it if you like: dark fantasy, edginess but not to the point it becomes comical, an mc that isn't a goody two shoes, yanderes, high tension and takes, adventure and an mc that always fight from a disadvantages position

Japan's Department of Education keeps records for this kind of stuff and third party organizations have gone through the data to figure out the best study methods. Yet, for some reason, djt and every other online community think that they have their own secret learning method that will finally solve Japanese. Don't fall for meme methods. Just follow the DoE's guidelines:

1. 10 months in person vocab training with a paid instructor.
2. 2 months reading translated Western novels.
3. 6 months residence in Japan as an English instructor.

That's all there is to it. Don't read textbooks. Don't watch vtubers. Don't play games set to Japanese. If you're actually serious about learning this 18 month program is all you need.
