Getting your hands on doll owner pics, like raw stripped down dolls so you can see them at their worst, super valuable pre-purchase. Vendors can provide good customer shots often. So ask them for customer photos. I had to buy almost all my dolls without reviews so I'm happy to help. Doll owners are almost all helpful. Once you find a doll you like post it here and maybe someone has one. They're still rare so you might have to dig around twitter feeds and I've searched "fc2" + "blog" often for dolls (Japanese blogging site). All vendors will send you factory shots which is like the bare bones of factory positioned doll. These are as essential as the customer shots. Then the studio shots tell you how far you can go with costume, poses, and lighting. Watch out for makeup and filters. Great looking artful photos are awesome but ultimately not for purchasing. They do tell you how fare you can take a doll for costuming and that is worth consideration as well. Contrast all three before making a decision. I have not used any of their newer sleeves but they are supposed to be pretty good. I honestly think the standard sleeve is durable but still crap and you need something snug with a plastic case instead. therefore most onas don't really work for me either. i was thinking about 3D printing cases to properly use onas with TheHandy but have not bothered so far.

Silicone doesn't need to be powdered and is easier to keep clean. When I fuck my tpe doll I have to repowder the entire crotch/thigh/tummy area from wiping it down or shit sticks to it. Silicone you can wipe down and dry and it's good as new.

a lot, not all companies use the same proportions and connectors vary a bit, especially with mfg like Sanhui that like to use their own special version, which while nice on its own is damn near impossible to match and i cant tell if they welded it in or if its just locktighted.

a lot of the 3rd party sites have heads for various manufactures, but there are still a few holdouts that refuse to sell them on their own.

thedollchannel and siliconelovers both have good head selection. i actually got my SE one above through siliconelovers.

compatibility depends a lot on the mfg and type of connection. most have gone to a socket neck and peg head so you have some way of adapting most of them(there are some that have peg necks and socket heads). For my Sanhui to SE, the SE uses a standard m16 half thread/ball peg that a lot tend to use since its cheap and well available. Sanhui has a custom fit peg that seems to be around an M14, so slightly too small to just use the M16 as is.

I agree with both directions. I prefer AIO by far for aesthetics but I can't customize what I want. e.g., Sanhui has an AIO body I want but an AIO with the head I want. I think at some point we'll move to full AIO then modular faces. IF they can figure out how to diminish seams like in the movie Ex Machina. That would be fantastic as you can do modules anywhere in the structure of the doll (or at this point android). For now with these limitations I agree that head standardization (color, sizes) between manufacturers would be great for doll harems. I don't see that happening though. Too much difference between sculptors visions and blends might need to change because of supply. They can still make it easier to match colors and sizes of heads to each other. But to your point a single manufacturer can work on increasing the modularity so we have more shopping options. Although I'm not sure where this would come into play except head/eyes and maybe joint repairs.

head joints and eyes are the most obvious ones like you mentioned and a lot are becoming more consistant, but the SE eyes for example; while probably the majority style, are dogshit compared to my Sanhi. Sanhui uses proper spring/ball capture eyes and the SE just has the half spheres most seem to use.

standardizing some things like connectors and eyes would give the mfg more options with less cost since its better distributed. someone developing a technique for modular head casting would be big for adding/removing various features such as elf ears or horns or those slightly odd fleshy ears eslababe is doing.

One good thing about AIO (apart from the obvious lack of neck seam) is that there is a second joint where the head connects to the top of the neck, so you can tilt the head without having to move the entire neck. It gives some extra flexibility and more natural looking head tilt poses possible.

There are eyes that have sockets, springs, and all sorts of cool colors out there. Lot of high end vendors have shitty eyes for some reason. I don't get that. This is an easy improvement and an easy customization. For the rest I think a base height that can have the body somehow inflated/deflated for its shape and a modular face would be the apex. With anime dolls for example you could have a completely different character by changing the size of the body and then applying a different set of eyes and a wig. Take that a step further with a replaceable face plate. But what is important here are the motherfucking elf ears and they need to get that shit done before my balls explode because I am still waiting to buy a goddamn new doll because of this.

So how much better is a doll?

I've tried a fleshlight, which is okay but bulky and clunky. Ona was definitely better and the ease of use/cleaning is worth the extra feeling.
