All of the games on the right are terrible. Fallout 3? Oblivion with guns. And even less land and even less quests and even more of environments that all look the same, but it's okay since it's a post-apocalyptic world and everything is supposed to be like that. Also extremely annoying 1950's/1960's shit. Overall, worst setting ever.

Bioshock, terrible gameplay. Go to point X, killing some guys on the way. Point X closes off, need to go to point Y to open point X. Repeat. Nothing else. Also has that fucking annoying 1950s/1960s setting shit. I want to tear the head off that happy go luck shit. If I hear the name Mary one more time...

Whathow.
Why would you ever grind? Besides all the random battles than you can just walk away from, there are only two fights in the entire game that you HAVE to fight; a zombie in the mortuary in the beginning of the game, and a guard in Curst for a key much later on. Everything else can be talked out of. Yes, even the final boss.
Protip: Start game, dump all your stat points into WIS. Once that reaches 20, do the same with INT and CHA. Then get the three to 25. Everything else? Worthless.

I mean, damn, one previous incarnation of the Nameless One even debated a guy into nonexistence. You aren't supposed to be fighting.

It's an unfair comparison, though; there's enough text in Torment to call it an english visual novel with RPG elements thrown in.

Grind being defined here as 'a boring prolonged and unpleasant experience of clicking constantly in order to get a small reward'.

I think I, who have played the game countless times and read every single line of dialogue text, unlocked everything there is to unlock and seen eveything there is to see, know more about FF7 than some random game guide authors; even if those authors work for Square. The problem is that hardly any western RPGs have really *interesting* battles. Most "hard" battles primarily consist of a big enemy with lots of HP, and nothing particularly interesting to bring up strategy.

Western RPGs win in general because the gameplay is not as universally shit, but they seem to have dropped strategy at the door and forgotten about it.

Touhou Labyrinth, oddly enough, was a big refresher for me, since it brough back those days of really freaking hard boss fights where you have to think everything through in order to win.

Random encounters can still go suck a dick though.

In large part, I think that's part of the challenge: bonuses in a Civ game are *fine* as long as they're obvious to the player. Silent cheating is obnoxious, but if all the computers get a small happiness/health/production bonus, that's just a handicap.

I love playing Victoria because the AI can be particularly challenging, both in and out of war. Nothing like winning a war against a major power, thinking you're hot shit cause you've got the largest military in the world and a great industrial base, only to wake up one day to find half of continental Europe has decided to declare war on your ass through a web of alliances because you pissed them all off one way or another over the last decade or two.
