So after 1 million chapters I got to that chapter in Imperfect Metamorphosis where (FUCKHUGE SPOILER) MARISA IS ABOUT TO STAB ELDRICH HORROR YUUKA TO DEATH FINALLY BUT SOME VOICES IN HER HEAD TELL HER "LE KILLING IZ BADXD" AND SHE BACKS DOWN THEN SMUG BITCH YUUKA HUMILIATES HER, FUCKING KILLS HER AND TURNS HER INTO A PUPPET AND REIMU HAS TO BLAST HER FRIEND'S DEAD BODY AND THEN FUCKING MIMA FINDS HER FUCKING CORPSE AND SHE JUST GOES "Oh well Marisa's dead, so anyway...". WHAT THE FUCK DUDE? I read so much of this dumb shit just because everything was written well and Marisa and Mima were fuckin' cool and I was thinking it was going to be a "Marisa goes off the deep end" story or something but no, this is fucking shit.

Now that I read IM and touhou Ibunshu and confirmed that both of them are ass I'm convinced western Touhou fans can only produce trash.

Writing is hard.
Why'd you expect literal fanfiction to necessarily be good?
There are some nice stories on occasion, but that's it.

It's no different than writing normal stories
It should be even easier because you already have characters and a world to work with. You just need to think up a good plot.
Fanfiction is usually bad because it's written by teenage girls but this was written by a 30 y/o man so I had higher hopes. And honestly it was pretty good at the beginning

It was good though if you skipped the edgy Rumia/Rin/Team9 scenes (they go on for way too long and honestly who cares). It had the best characterization of any fanwork I've ever seen. Some times I was laughing out loud while reading it and felt for the characters. And I thought some of the plot points were interesting. So it made me mad when the author pissed all over it.

To be fair, all of us had a phase where we just did not have any taste whatsoever and anons probably just going through his. I remember refreshing the page weekly back when I was younger because I was super into it, and the only reason this thread caught my eye was because OP unlocked some of those secret memories for me. And honestly? I kind of miss those times when I could just devour trashy shit and enjoy it. Now my only fill of garbage is from doujins.
>>41119450
Depends on what you define as fanfiction and good; Fate is essentially a giant collection of fanfiction and it certainly isn't all good for example. There's a couple of CYOA's on that 2hu website dedicated to it I check up on every year or so that are fun reads too, though I'll admit a lot of it is both nostalgia and the few authors who kinda-sorta stick around being the standouts through the rest which is your usual self-fulfillment schlock.

I always found Touhou a nice sandbox-like world to make stories of, it's a shame that most of it is sloppy lesbian romance and overpowered gappies. Back in the day there were good fanfics, but most of them ended up unfinished and abandoned. I actually wanted to write one for myself but I lost track of the lore ever since Mountain of Faith and I got too lazy to get back up to date.

A lot of western ones are like that as well. It's basically just Isekai, which is funny since Touhou is anti Isekai.

I wanted to write a story about Touhou as well. Then I realized nobody in the west knows about it and I could just make a original work with the same premise as Gensokyo.

I won't lie, there were some bits I quite liked
The weird dream sequence bit was cool, I enjoyed the big yuuka fight (the first one where marisa gets hopped up on mushrooms), and yuuka's mental breakdown as it went on, but there's so much pointless fluff and a little too many fanon characters like psycho flan (even if that had somewhat of a payoff)
I like the mokou/kaguya spinoff he did more than the main story, I think.

How the fuck do people manage to write long stories? Maybe I'm just an undiagnosed sped that should be compleletely zoned out on ritalin or something, but during my one and only attempt so far I was barely able to write a 800 word short before I was done with the entire thing, now im struggling on starting with the next one

What would be the point then? The idea is to use the characters and circumstances of the work. Even if no one knows what Touhou is, putting more effort into an original work that would also be unknown would be the same.

Being able to sell it as a original property. As well as being given absolute freedom in what the setting and world is like.

Anyway, it's basically a combination of two Touhou fanfic ideas I had. One about Sakuya's backstory (I know, original) and one that's just a retelling of the story expect more serious and not played for black comedy (Again, original, I know). It's changed a lot though, and while it's still highly influenced I like to think it stands on it's own nowadays.
