I'm thinking to do something similar.
Been playing hard mode for several games for the past year, and I've gotten quite comfortable with EoSD hard. Tried a a lunatic run for shits and giggles and got all the way to Patchy, so I think I can do it.
But I don't wanna try it until the 11th, cuz awtizm, and I want to do the whole grinding process at once. I'm free that day, so I'm sure it'll work out, unless everything in stage 5/6 is seriously THAT much worse than on hard mode

In all honesty. Both LLS and MS are better games than EoSD. The games visuals and Touhou portraits look really pretty for what ZUN could do at the time, and there also seems to be more thought on the actual stage designs, enemy placement as well as the difficulty curve. EoSD on the other hand was rushed and the difficulty is all over the place.
The only reason EoSD was even made was because ZUN wanted to sell Dolls in Pseudo Paradise. He had tried to enter Comiket 61 as a music circle but got rejected, so he was forced to make a game to even participate in C62.

And yeah, a big issue I had with extra stages for a while was that I'd get so caught up resetting on the stage/midboss portions I'd rob myself of time learning the actual boss, who, like here, isn't even all that bad for most of the fight.

I wouldn't know with full certainty. But it wouldn't be the first time he'd have done something like that.
ZUN mentioned once that Tabula Rasa was one of the first songs he ever composed (even before anything Touhou), and he rearranged it years later and gave it to Ellen when he was making PoDD. Mind you, Ellen was a character from a manga he liked in his teenage years, so it's possible he always had Ellen in mind when first composing it.

I'm not using any engine. I wrote an ECS using Typescript and WebGL. I'm also going to make an MS Paint style GUI where non-programmers can drag and drop enemies and MIDIs on to the stage. That demo isn't using WebGL so it probably won't run at 60FPS on older PCs. ETA is probably next year.

I didn't like EoSD but I must admit it has some of the most iconic themes. If you compare it to ZUN's recent songs it is clear that ZUN is past his prime and is only looking to collect pay checks at this point in his career.

Also, almost 50% of Touhou's lore revolves around characters from that game. I don't think Touhou explodes in popularity without EoSD. It's biggest flaw is that the difficulty is all over the place. It is so easy that even secondary fans were able to have success with it.

And here's the anniversary 1cc. It's not much, but it's something. I swear I thought I remembered EoSD's patterns better than that. Same for my thoughts on MarisaB. Both a decade ago & even a few months ago when I more seriously marathoned the entire franchise I would have sworn she was better than that, then again I beat my old score (In which I hadn't gotten the last score Extend). I didn't remember struggling much on stages and I remembered Patchouli being rather simple, instead here she was mixed, although I managed to capture most spells. I'm also still really bad at Red Magic, don't know if it's my memory messing up or my new approach somehow making me worse, maybe even Rank but I doubt it's that.
I was prior to the 1cc a bit more mixed on the whole ordeal but quite frankly it's no use. I, like many others, owe much to this game in a lot of ways, so I shouldn't feel resentment for those who chose to stay commited to mostly it & a few other entries. I'd argue the merits of the newer titles but this is not really the time for it. Ultimately, EoSD is pretty gripping, intriguing and mysterious yet understandable by all, and that final showdown on the Red Moon with Septette is as fantastic as usual.

Nostalgia goggles aside, I appreciate EoSD for being a solid base from which modern Touhou grew. And while I enjoy the newer entries just as much if not more, there's something special about the ambience of the older games that keeps me coming back.

After you clear it once, you'll notice that you're able to clear it again more easily. This goes for all the games. One part of it is reflex skill, but you should also be executing techniques and strategies to clear the game.

In the extra stage, bullet streaming is important for clearing much of the non-boss portion, you can refrain from reaching full power mode until the screen fills with bullets that you can clear, it helps to be able to seek out voids in the bullets during dense spells like Philosopher's Stone & Starbow Break, and there are specific paths you can follow to capture Cranberry Trap & And Then There Were None.

Also, beating something harder than what you're playing does make coming back to your usual gameplay feel easier. After you start getting EX clears, you might start first-try clearing normal mode runs.

It is possible to enjoy making games, but to make a game in the same genre for over 2 decades seems like it would get tedious. That's like a web developer being forced to make the same e-commerce website for 20 years. That would drive me insane. I can hardly get finished with one project before wanting to move onto the next.

Building Touhou games does have an element of setting up the same canvas over and over, but the actual meat of the games is more like drawing, gluing, and constructing whatever you wish onto that canvas. Between mathematical parametric-function art manifested in a danmaku game (ZUN majored in mathematics), his own widely-appreciated manga-esque stories & characters (he based many of his characters on manga he enjoyed), and music that he loved making from the beginning (he initially just wanted to sell his music but couldn't do it at Comiket without attaching it to something like a game), he's got a pretty good outlet for a variety of his own passions.

He's got all this going on without the vices of the theoretical e-commerce site, as he's not under very serious pressure from the people paying him, the product actually belongs to him instead of any bureaucracy so he can change things he doesn't enjoy at his leisure, and he doesn't need to cater to industry trends. It's more like he's making his own Neocities pages and having people pay to use them.
